(Aug. 13, 2007) − In September, adults age 55 and older in Eastern Kentucky will have the opportunity to register for classes from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Kentucky to be held at locations in Rowan and Bath Counties. The classes will cover a variety of topics, typically in 6-8 week sessions. An organizing committee made up of community organizations and individuals and representatives from Morehead State University (MSU) has been meeting regularly to target offerings toward the educational interests of adults 55-years and older. A grand opening celebration, is scheduled for 1– 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at the Carl Perkins Community Center in Morehead. During the event, fall 2007 classes will be introduced and registration for courses will be open. A special guest presentation on Morehead's Moonlight Schools: Pioneers in Lifelong Learning will be given by Dr. Yvonne Baldwin from MSU. Refreshments will be served and door prizes drawn. The new Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UK will be lead by a leadership council of community representatives and OLLI members. A curriculum committee, will determine the courses offered each semester. To become a member, persons must be at least 55 years of age. There is a membership fee of $10 per semester for as many classes as one would like to take. "Learning can be a consistent source of pleasure throughout our lives, and there is increasing evidence that it contributes to health and well-being as we age. Eastern Kentucky has shown tremendous enthusiasm in planning for this new program,” said OLLI Executive Director Mike Smith. The Osher Foundation supports a growing national network of lifelong learning institutes for older adults, operating at over 112 colleges and universities across the country.
