Recent HappeningsRural Cancer Project Announces First Community Hog Roast − The RCPC will be sponsoring a hog roast on Friday, November 13, in Hyden at the Kentucky Homeplace office. UKCERH-H Receives Grant for Dental Equipment − The University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health in Hazard recently received a $20,000 grant to expand its dental outreach services. Psychologist Set to Join Local UK Clinic − The UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center is adding another clinical psychologist to its team of health care providers. UK Physical Therapy Student Wins Scholarship − a student in the doctor of physical therapy program at the UK Center for Excellence in Rural Health in Hazard, recently received a $500 scholarship to fund her attendance at the American Physical Therapy Association’s upcoming National Student Conclave. Perry Woman Wins Gift Basket From UK Clinic − Teresa Duff of Hazard recently won a Black Gold Festival contest drawing for a gift basket that contained UK apparel and football tickets. Local UK Student Wins Social Work Scholarship − For the second consecutive year, a student in the University of Kentucky’s Southeast Kentucky Master of Social Work Program has received the prestigious Fay Friedman Scholarship Award. Knott County Student Wins Football From UK Clinic − A Hindman Elementary School student recently won a football signed by University of Kentucky football coach Rich Brooks. Casey Re-Elected to AMA Council − Dr. Baretta R. Casey, director of the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard, has been re-elected to the American Medical Association’s Council on Medical Education. Dr. Miranda Hollen Will Join Medical Staff at Local UK Clinic − For the past three years, Dr. Miranda Hollen has trained as a family medicine resident within the UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center. Effective July 1, she will join the clinic’s staff of full-time health care providers. New Family Medicine Physician Set to Join Local UK Clinic − The UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center is adding another family medicine physician to its team of health care providers. Dr. Joe E. Kingery is scheduled to begin treating patients at the clinic on July 1. Hazard-based Family Medicine Residency Program Wins Quiz Bowl − The team of Dr. Key Douthitt and Dr. Sobia Amjad finished in a first-place tie at the 2009 Kentucky Association of Family Physicians’ Resident Quiz Bowl. Grant Promotes E. Kentucky Cancer Prevention − Richard A. Crosby of the University of Kentucky’s College of Public Health has received a multi-million dollar grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gross Assumes Presidency of Healthcare Public Relations Society − David A. Gross, the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard’s director of research, marketing and community engagement, has been installed as president of the Kentucky Society for Healthcare Public Relations & Marketing (KSHPRM). UKCERH-Hazard Researcher Receives National Award − David A. Gross, the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard’s director of research, marketing and community engagement, has won an award for a health analysis project. International Visitors Tour Perry County Health Care Organizations − The University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard recently hosted four international health care officials. The visitors were in Kentucky to learn about women’s health programs. Kentuckian Named to NRHA’s Rural Health Congress − Dr. Baretta R. Casey, director of the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard, has been appointed to the National Rural Health Association’s (NRHA) Rural Health Congress.
