Hazard-based Family Medicine Residency Program Wins Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl winnersHAZARD, Ky. (June 8, 2009) − The team of Dr. Key Douthitt, a native of Jackson, and Dr. Sobia Amjad, who lives in Hazard, pose with the trophy and a check after finishing in a first-place tie at the 2009 Kentucky Association of Family Physicians’ Resident Quiz Bowl. It was the second consecutive year that a team from the University of Kentucky’s East Kentucky Family Medicine Residency Program won at least a share of first place. In fact, there was a four-way tie for first − even after three tie-breaker rounds. The contest, held on May 16 in Lexington, involved both medical-related and general trivia questions given to teams from each of Kentucky’s seven family medicine residency programs.

"I have never been more proud of our family medicine residency program," said Dr. Baretta R. Casey, vice chair of UK’s Department of Family & Community Medicine, who attended the Quiz Bowl to support the residents. "Their medical knowledge was evident by not missing any of the medical questions."

After graduating from medical school, doctors must complete a residency to gain expertise in a particular field of medicine. In the case of family medicine, the residency lasts for three years. The East Kentucky Family Medicine Residency Program is based at the UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center, which is located at 750 Morton Blvd. in Hazard. Now in its 19th year, the residency program’s mission is to prepare family physicians for careers in rural medicine, with a focus on meeting the health care needs of the people of rural Appalachia. The program has produced 48 graduates, with the majority practicing in medically underserved areas, primarily in Appalachian counties of Kentucky.
