Dr. Miranda Hollen Will Join Medical Staff at Local UK Clinic

Dr. Miranda HollenHAZARD, Ky. (June 15, 2009) − For the past three years, Dr. Miranda Hollen has trained as a family medicine resident within the UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center. Effective July 1, she will join the clinic’s staff of full-time health care providers.

Hollen, a native of Clay County, offers a broad range of primary care services, with special interests in geriatrics and behavioral health.

"I am delighted that UK HealthCare is bringing Dr. Hollen’s expertise to the UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center," said Dr. Baretta R. Casey, director of the University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard, which hosts the clinic. "She has been - and will continue to be - a strong advocate for the health care needs of our people."

Hollen said she was drawn to the medical profession by the strong bond that can form between doctors and their patients.

"I like being an integral part of a patient’s life," she said. "They tell their physician things they won’t tell anybody else. I’m excited to be staying here so I can continue to work with my current patients - and I welcome new ones of all ages."

Hollen earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology from the former Cumberland College in Williamsburg and then a doctor of medicine degree from UK. She has nearly completed three years of additional training at UK’s East Kentucky Family Medicine Residency Program. Hollen, who has served as the program’s chief resident for the past year, is scheduled to graduate later this month.

"Patients feel comfortable with me because I listen to them," she said. "I treat all patients the same, regardless of whether they have insurance or how complicated their health care issues are."

The UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center’s primary care services include preventive and sports medicine, women’s health and maternity care, pediatric and geriatric care, and immunizations. As a federally funded health center, it is required to deliver care regardless of patients’ ability to pay, and charges for services are set according to patients’ respective income levels.

The clinic, located at 750 Morton Blvd. in Hazard, also offers behavioral health, dental, laboratory and pharmacy services to residents of Perry and surrounding counties.

Hollen lives in Hazard with her husband Todd, who is pursuing a doctor of osteopathy degree from the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine.
