Appalachian Kentucky Bridges to Success

The University of Kentucky Center for Excellence in Rural Health-Hazard and Hazard Community & Technical College (HCTC) have partnered on a project that is intended to increase the number of local students who pursue a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.

The program, which began July 2008, will include instruction and experience to increase participants’ awareness of health care career options, as well as mentoring and support in applying to transfer from community college to four-year academic institutions. Current plans also call for assessment of participants’ progress and follow-up after transfer from the community college.

Specific aims of the initiative include:

• Successful recruitment of 15 to 20 program participants from HCTC each year;
• Doubling the proportion of HCTC students who declare majors in the life and natural sciences within the first five years of program enactment;
• Increasing transfer rates to bachelor’s degree programs from a baseline of less than 10 percent of total HCTC students to an average of 50 percent of students who participate in the Bridges program; and
• Demonstrating that at least 50 percent of Bridges students who transfer to a four-year institution will attain their degree in a health care field within six years.

Students will be assigned a mentor, receive career and transfer counseling, take classes, and be involved in research experiences, as well as receive individual tutoring and other assistance.
