Timothy S. Tracy, PhD, former professor and head of the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, has been named dean of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. Tracy, who also served as the University of Minnesota's director of clinical translational research services at the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, began his post in Lexington on Aug. 15

Robert Kuhn, PharmD, Professor in the Dept. of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University ofKentucky College of Pharmacy, PGY2 Pediatric Residency Director, and Associate Director of Pharmacy Services at the Kentucky Children's Hospital has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the Helms Award for Excellence in Pediatric Pharmacy Practice. The award recognizes sustained and meritorious contributions to Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG) and to pediatric pharmacy practice and contributions of importance to education, new knowledge and outreach.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ashley Newland (R363) for winning the poster competition (Post Doctoral Clinical Science Division) at the Markey Cancer Center Research Day. Dr. Newland has been investigating the incidence of invasive fungal infections in patients with hematological malignancies in rural versus urban populations in Kentucky. She competed against other residents, clinicians, and graduate staff in this interdisciplinary poster competition. Congratulations Ashley!

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Karen Blumenschein (R197) on the final approval of her endowed professorship.  This Professorship provides funds for research and instruction focusing on the social, economic and managerial sciences in pharmacy.

Dr. Blumenschein is an Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, with a joint appointment as Associate Professor, Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, Graduate School, appointed to the U.S. Surgical Endowed Professorship, effective 1/1/07.

2/8/2010 - Jones and Zillich to Receive ACCP Honors

ACCP members Mikael Jones, Pharm.D., BCPS (R 299) and Alan Zillich, Pharm.D. (R 271), were selected by the 2009 ACCP Awards Committee to receive the College’s prestigious 2010 New Educator and New Investigator Awards, respectively. The awards will be presented in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday, April 24, 2010, during the Opening General Session of the 2010 Spring Practice and Research Forum. Both of these clinicians completed their PGY2 Ambulatory Care training here at UK, under the guidance of Dr. Aimee Adams (R 220). 2/3/2010 - Former Resident Named Dean of Philidelphia College of Pharmacy

Lisa A. Lawson, PharmD Dr. Lisa A. Lawson (R 88) has accepted the dean position at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. This is an historic announcement as Dr. Lawson is the first woman to hold this prestigious position. She has also accepted the Barbara H. Korberly Professorship in Women's Leadership and Health. Prior to accepting the interim dean position, Dr. Lawson was an associate professor of clinical pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacy Practice/Pharmacy Administration. She was director of the doctor of pharmacy program from 1989 to 1994, then assistant dean of pharmacy between 1994-2006, followed by associate dean. She had been the vice dean within PCP since 2008. Dr. Lawson received her bachelor of science degree at the University of Nebraska and her doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Kentucky. At UK, she completed a three-year pharmacy residency at Albert B. Chandler Medical Center, before joining the faculty of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1982.

12/14/2009 - Thomas Foster, PharmD is Selected for Prestigious USP Beal Award

Thomas FosterThomas S. Foster, Pharm.D. has been named the recipient of USP’s pinnacle award, the Beal Award for Distinguished Volunteer Service.  The award is given once every five years and recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions while serving as a USP volunteer.  During a special ceremony at the 2010 Convention, Dr. Foster will receive a crystal sculpture representing USP’s spirit of voluntarism and become a lifetime Honorary Member of the USP Convention.  Dr. Foster has directed that the cash portion of the award ($10,000) be donated to the Paul F. Parker Endowment Fund at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy. Dr. Foster's continued involvement in this, as well as other organizations serves as a model for the residents, preceptors, students, and practitioners that he interacts with at the University of Kentucky. We would like to congratulate him for this wonderful achievement.

Robert Rapp, Pharm.D., FCCP, retired after a forty year career at the University of Kentucky. Having held positions from Pharmacy Intern through College of Pharmacy Department Chair, Professor, and Associate Director of Pharmacy Services, Bob has demonstrated unparalleled leadership and innovation in many of the outstanding pharmacy programs at the hospital and the college. Bob has been a leader in his own practice, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally in the worlds of pharmacy practice, pharmacy education, pharmacy administration, neurosurgery pharmacy practice, total parenteral nutrition, sterile products, and infectious diseases. A winner of the ACCP Parker Medal and UK Parker Award, Bob’s impact has been great. 4/28/09 - Former Resident Named Dean

Congratulations to Henry Mann, PharmD, FASHP, FCCP, FCCM (R89) on accepting the position of Dean, Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. Dr. Mann has served as faculty at the University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy for the past 29 years, establishing the interdisciplinary Center for Excellence in Critical Care, which advances quality of care in ICUs across the United States. 3/21/09 - PGY2 Resident Receives ACCP Adult Medicine PRN Residency Research Award

We would like to congratulate Mike Farley, PharmD, PGY2 Internal Medicine Resident for receiving the ACCP Adult Medicine PRN Residency Research Award for his research entitled: "Characterization of a 24 hour pharmacist managed direct thrombin inhibitor (DTI) program". The purpose of this award is to provide an opportunity for a pharmacy resident or fellow to present and promote his or her current research efforts to the ACCP Adult Medicine PRN. Mike will present his research at the spring ACCP meeting in Orlando.  He will also receive a $1000 award that will go toward registration and travel expenses to the Spring ACCP meeting.

2/26/09 - Paul F. Parker Honored in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association

Paul F. Parker, former Director of Pharmacy at the University of Kentucky, was featured in the January/February issue of the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association (JAPhA) in their "Heros of Pharmacy" series. Each installment in this series provides a sketch of a hero of pharmacy, including

kshp logoCongratulations to Aaron Cook, PharmD, BCPS and Will Vincent, PharmD for their KSHP (Kentucky Society of Health-System Pharmacists) Awards.  Dr. Cook, Neurosurgery/Critical Care Clinical Pharmacist Specialist, was named KSHP Pharmacist of the Year for his practice and volunteer efforts.  Dr. Vincent, PGY2 Pharmacy Resident, was named KSHP Resident of the Year for his practice and public health/volunteer work (Salvation Army Clinic and mission trip to Haiti).
