The Office of Workforce Development serves to coordinate the efforts of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health, other Kentucky public health education programs and the public health practice community throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We strive to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as public health practitioners. We offer a variety of learning resources and training programs including graduate and doctoral degrees, graduate certificates, grand rounds, intensive leadership institutes, and casual one-hour brown bag sessions. We hope to meet the needs of the community by offering innovative solutions to public health issues, as well as by publicizing existing resources and building collaborations among various individuals, centers, departments, community agencies, and other universities. The public health workforce of today faces tremendous time challenges that may prevent professional development; therefore, we offer learning through both distance and face-to-face education. Our goal is to provide a center for training, information, and partnerships across the state and the region to facilitate a culture of learning communities that further our public health objectives and the health of populations. Kentucky Institute of Public Health Practice Enhancement
The Kentucky Institute of Public Health Practice enhancement will serve as a bridge between academia and public health practice in this collaborative effort for addressing the workforce development of public health practitioners at the local and state levels. The institute will provide a practice-based environment for the public health workforece, students and faculty to learn and to teach.
Kentucky Public Health Leadership Institute
Kentucky Public Health Leadership Institute a multi-disciplinary institute’s goal is to strengthen Kentucky’s public health by improving the leadership skills of the professionals who administer state, regional, and local public health systems. The leadership institute looks for individuals with experience in different public health settings and an educational background in public health.
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kentucky
Members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UK (OLLI at UK) experience the rich and diverse resources of the university while learning informally in the company of their own peers 50 years and older. Classes in Lexington, Morehead, and Somerset offer a tremendous variety of subjects and activities in short non-credit courses. Members are actively involved in planning the courses. Learning is a pleasure, and learning with friends is an even greater pleasure. We celebrate frequently though special events such as holiday luncheons, concerts, art exhibits and travel.
Ohio Valley Appalachia Regional Geriatric Education Center
The Ohio Valley Appalachia Regional Geriatric Education Center was established October 1, 1985 to provide education and training opportunities for health professionals and other personnel in order to enhance the availability and the quality of health care for older adults. The OVAR/GEC is a member of the National Association of Geriatric Education Centers, a national geriatric education initiative funded by the USDHHS, Health Resources and Services Administration, US Public Health Service, Bureau of Health Professions. OVAR/GEC is administratively based at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center under the direction of the College of Public Health and serves as a base for communication and program collaboration for a consortium of four universities in a three-state region - University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, University of Cincinnati, and East Tennessee State University.
Practice & Service
The purpose of the field practicum is to provide the student with the opportunity and experience of applying theory and principles learned in the classroom to work situations. It also affords the opportunity for the student to become acquainted with the activities of private companies, public agencies, and community groups (organizations) commonly engaged in occupational, public health or environmental health practice.
UK Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health Clinic
UK Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health clinic provides consultation in the areas of preventive medicine, occupational health and environmentally-related health problems. The faculty and staff evaluate and manage anticipated health problems and identify occupational and lifestyle hazards and environmentally-related disorders, emphasizing individual health maintenance in their approach to the promotion of good health. The clinic assists companies in the identification of workplace health hazards, cost-effective preventive health programs and fringe benefit packages for employees. Summer Series on Aging
Summer Series on Aging is held annually each summer in Lexington, Kentucky. This conference provides a forum for professionals to obtain the most current information in geriatrics and gerontology from a broad-based, multidisciplinary perspective.
