Life in the Bluegrass
The University is located in Lexington, a pleasant mid-size city of approximately 260,000 people located in the center of the Bluegrass region. The city itself has a rich cultural life, exemplified by fine theaters and restaurants. Excellent theatrical productions, speakers, and concerts are also attracted by outstanding facilities such as the Civic Center, Center for the Arts, and Rupp Arena. Major sports events also are an integral aspect of the region's activities. The urban area is surrounded by verdant rolling countryside, which supports over 400 thoroughbred farms and is ideal for touring and bicycling. The Bluegrass region has been noted to be a "national treasure" in major publications. Opportunities for outdoor sports, such as camping, hiking, horseback riding, and boating are abundant in a nearby National Forest, state parks and lakes. Cincinnati and Louisville, major metropolitan areas with their own cultural attractions, are approximately 70-80 miles away to the north and west, respectively.
