CHS Physical Therapy
Clinical Education is…
A break from the classroom…a chance to try my skills…applying my knowledge to people with impairments instead of classmates…a chance to expand my view of the profession of physical therapy…learning while experiencing other parts of Kentucky, other states and the world!
The University of Kentucky clinical education program is an essential partnership between the university and facilities throughout Kentucky, across the U.S, and overseas. We have affiliations with sites in 29 states, Washington, D.C., England and Australia. In 36 weeks, integrated throughout the three years of the program, the student gradually builds skill necessary to become an independent and versatile physical therapist. There are also elective opportunities including a medical service trip to Ecuador, offering students chances to serve while learning during the second and third years of the program.
Clinical Education Sites
Following are links to the clinical facilities by region with active relationships with the University of Kentucky Physical Therapy program. These sites vary in their availability from year to year to teach our students during their clinical internships, but the choices are always plentiful. Each student will have the opportunity to make requests from the approximately 400 sites.
Each student will receive education in one acute care facility, one long-term care facility (this may be a rehabilitation center or nursing home rehabilitation setting) and one outpatient clinic. There are a number of specialized settings included (pediatrics, burn units for adults and pediatrics, sports clinics and others). During our 2003 visit from the Commission on Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education programs, the team of evaluators described the clinical education program as a strength of the UK PT program.
