The goal of this program is to develop strategies in neurorehabilitation to enhance functional recovery after stroke and spinal cord injury. Using techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation and functional magnetic resonance imaging, our neurorehabilitation program explores and refines pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to be applied in the clinical setting.
Our Background: Established in 1957, UK HealthCare consists of the medical, nursing, health sciences, public health, dental and pharmacy patient care activities of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, and in several off-site locations. UK HealthCare is committed to the pillars of academic health care—research, education and clinical care. Since 1950, Cardinal Hill Healthcare System has been a leader in providing physical rehabilitation services in Kentucky and the southeast region and is dedicated to helping people of all ages regain maximum independence and health. The UK HealthCare Stroke and Spinal Cord Neurorehabilitation Research Program at Cardinal Hill Hospital unites these respected institutions under the direction of Dr. Lumy Sawaki, Cardinal Hill Endowed Scholar. Her endowed professorship in neurorehabilitation was made possible through a grant from Cardinal Hill to UK’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, along with matching funds from the Kentucky Research Challenge Trust Fund.
