Specific Interest in Nutrition:
Mechanisms of diabetic, renal and vascular complications.
Research:
Diabetic renal and vascular complications are the major causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients. Identification of the cellular and molecular mechanisms that trigger the development of these complications is important for development of therapeutic interventions. Research in Dr. Wang’s lab has demonstrated that glucose-mediated upregulation of thrombospondin1 (TSP1) expression and TSP1-dependent TGF-β activation occurs through down-modulation of Nitric Oxide (NO)/cGMP/cGMP–Dependent protein kinase (PKG) signaling pathway. Current research projects in her lab are to determine the molecular mechanisms by which glucose and PKG regulate TSP1 expression, contributing to the activation of latent TGF-β in diabetic renal and vascular complications. These studies will provide novel therapeutic approaches to attenuate the development of diabetic complications.
