Zim Okoli received a prestigious
postdoctoral award from the Canadian Institute of Health
Research Strategic Training Program in Tobacco Research.
He began this training upon completion of a one-year,
$50,000 postdoctoral fellowship from NEXUS, a
multidisciplinary research group at the University of
British Columbia in Vancouver.

Mohannad Abu Ruz received second place in the Graduate Student
Poster Contest at the Southern Nursing Research Society
conference in February 2006. His
poster was titled, "The
Brief Symptom Inventory Is a Quick, Reliable Way to Measure
Anxiety in Patients Hospitalized with AMI." |

Jennifer Hatcher and her committee
member, Nancy Schoenberg (Behavioral Science), received a
three-year $150,000 Minority Supplement to Schoenberg’s R01, “An
Appalachian Cervical Cancer Prevention Project,” funded
by the National Cancer Institute. This highly
competitive and prestigious award will support Hatcher
for one year as a predoctoral fellow and two years as a
postdoctoral fellow.

Fawwaz Al Aloul received a $10,000
grant from the Oncology Nursing Society for his
dissertation research, “Quality of Life of Jordanians Post
Stem Cell Transplantation.”

Two Ph.D. students and a graduate of the program received Nursing Investigator
Awards at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Heart Failure Society of
America in Toronto in September 2004. Marla De Jong received a $1,000 prize for her research, “Anxiety, Depression,
and Functional Status Are the Best Predictors of Health Status in Patients
with Heart Failure.” Misook Chung, now research
assistant professor, received a $500 prize for, “Women Are
More Adherent to Low Sodium Diet Recommendations Than
Men.”
Brooke Bentley was also awarded $500 for, “The Hidden
Reason for Patients’ Nonadherence to Low Sodium Diet Recommendations.”

poster presentations
at the Southern Nursing Research Society Conference in
Louisville in February 2004. Megan Popielarczyk,
a B.S.N. student and the first UK undergraduate to
exhibit at SNRS, also received an award for her poster.

Seongkum
Heo was awarded a two-year American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship.
Her project is titled, “Body Fat,
Nutrition, and Outcomes in Patients with Heart Failure.”
This prestigious award will contribute to the College’s
growth in cardiovascular research expertise.
