The College continues its productivity
in seeking and obtaining grant funding. Our new totals
for FY 08 are: Submitted, $7,692,917; awarded,
$3,484,854; received, $1,400,720. Total pending,
including proposals submitted in FY 07, is $8,524,372.

Awards
Ellen Hahn
received a $50,000
six-month planning grant from the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation Tobacco Policy Change Program to establish a
Clean Indoor Air Collaborative in three northern Kentucky
counties. At the end of the six months, she will be
eligible for funds for an additional 18 months (up to
$300,000) to implement the plan.
Jia-Rong (Angela) Wu, postdoctoral fellow
with the RICH Heart program, has applied for a two-year,
$88,000 fellowship from the American Heart Association.
Her research, “Effect of a Theory-Based,
Medication-taking Behavior Feedback Intervention on
Medication Adherence and Outcomes in Patients with Heart Failure,” is being funded by a $10,000 Clinical Outcomes
Grant from the American Association of Critical-Care
Nurses (AACN).
Melanie Hardin-Pierce
received a grant
from the AACN for, “Inflammation, Cardiovascular
Function and Weaning from Mechanical Ventilation.” Susan
Frazier is her mentor for the one-year, $10,000 project.
Proposals
Debra Moser
submitted a five-year, $5.2
million R01 proposal to NIH, “Quality of Life, Morbidity
and Mortality in Patients with Heart Failure.” Barbara
Riegel, University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, is
co-PI.
Terry Lennie
and
Mary Kay Rayens
are
co-investigators, along with collaborators at eight
other sites across the country.
Deborah Reed submitted a
two-year, $356,509
proposal to NIOSH, “Strategies for Safety of Older Adult
Farmers.” Pamela Teaster from the College of Public
Health is co-investigator.

submitted a proposal to NIH/NIDA
for $402,875 for a two-year project, “An Integrative
Treatment Program for Pregnant and Postpartum Women.”

Emma (E.J.) Brown
submitted two proposals
to NIH: “Black Males’ Cancer, HIV, & Drug Use Prevention
Needs Via a CBPR Process,” and “Development of HIV
Intervention for Southern Rural Black Women.” Both are
1-year, $50,000 projects that involve intervention
research with community partners.
Leslie Scott submitted a $50,000
proposal to the Kentucky Diabetes Research Board, “SQ
Port Use in Children with DM on MDI Therapy: QOL,
Control, Regimen Satisfaction.”
Ellen Hahn and
Mary Kay Rayens are
preparing a 3-year, $100,000 proposal to the Robert Wood
Johnson Substance Abuse Policy Research Program,
“Smoke-Free Laws and Heart Attack Rates in a Southern
State.”
