Congratulations to these Ph.D. students who
successfully defended their dissertations this spring and
summer:
- Elizabeth Salt, Medication
Adherence in Rheumatoid Arthritis.
- Geri Reeves, Heart Failure,
Diabetes Mellitus and Depressive Symptoms: The
Convergence of Common Co-morbidities.
- Judy Schreiber, Image of God:

Awards
Demetrius Abshire, B.S.N.–Ph.D. student, received the
Lyman T. Johnson Odyssey Award from the UK Student
Government Association at the University Honors and
Recognition Awards Program in April.
Martha Biddle (Ph.D. student) received a $3,500 SNRS
Dissertation Award and $800 from Delta Psi for her
dissertation research, “A Dietary Lycopene Intervention in
Patients with Heart Failure.”
Trudy Gochett (Ph.D. student) received a 2-year $30,000
fellowship from the American Cancer Society for her
dissertation research, “Breast Cancer Survivorship: Factors
Related to Psychological Well-Being.” |
Fran Hardin-Fanning (Ph.D. student) was awarded the James S.
Brown 2009 Graduate Student Award for Research on
Appalachia. She received $1,000 to support her dissertation
research on the relationship between diet and
cardiovascular risk in Appalachian Kentucky. She is the
first nursing Ph.D. student to receive this prestigious
award.
Undergraduate research interns Susan Perry (Deborah
Reed, mentor) and Emily Davidson (Kristin
Ashford, mentor) each received a $2,000 summer
scholarship under UK’s eUreKa
program. |
Presentations
Sarah Kelly (Ph.D. 2008) had two presentations accepted
from her dissertation: “The Influence of Gang Violence on
Adolescents’ Mental Health,” presented at the 11th Annual
European Conference on Traumatic Stress in Oslo, Norway,
June 2009; and “Adolescent Boys’ Perceptions of Gangs and
Gang Violence,” to be presented at the APHA Annual Meeting,
Nov. 2009, in Philadelphia. Debra Anderson, Ann Peden, Lynne
Hall, & Julie Cerel (College of Social Work) are co-authors
on both papers. |
