Asthma is the most common chronic illness among children and adolescents. This pilot study lays the foundation for a matched-pairs study with 100 adolescent and parent dyads from Kentucky and 100 pairs from Reykjavik, Iceland. The research is innovative in that the sample is cross-cultural and involves parent-child dyads.

The specific aims of the pilot project are to: (1) assess the average time needed to complete each set of pencil-and-paper questionnaires (seven for the adolescent and four for the parent); (2) determine the acceptability of the questionnaires to the participants; and (3) obtain preliminary data to support submission of a proposal for federal funding (NIH) of a larger study. Fifteen pairs of adolescents (13 through 17 years of age) with asthma and their parents will be recruited from the pediatric clinics at the University of Kentucky. A similar pilot study will be conducted in Reykjavik, Iceland, by Dr. Erla Svavarsdottir, the co-principal investigator on the larger study.

Adolescent questionnaires include questions on  sociodemographics, asthma severity and adherence, functional status of asthma, asthma self-efficacy, depression, coping, and asthma quality of life. Scales administered to the parents include: sociodemographics, asthma severity and adherence, coping, and asthma quality of life. Data related to the specific aims will be analyzed descriptively.

The purpose of the larger cross-cultural international study is to develop a model of predictors of health related quality of life for adolescents with asthma and their parents. The specific aim is to determine the demographic, personal, and interpersonal factors that affect the adolescent’s asthma quality of life, as rated by both the adolescent and the parent. The long term objective is to develop an international model of predictors of health related quality of life for adolescents with asthma and their parents so that interventions can be designed to improve adolescent asthma quality of life, stated as a priority of the Healthy People 2010.
