Ruth Staten received both her Master of Science in Nursing and her Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Kentucky.

Her research focuses on health behaviors of college students and student athletes, with an emphasis on the prevention of substance abuse, particularly tobacco and alcohol.

Staten serves on the steering committee for the University's Campus-Community Coalition on Reduction of High-Risk Drinking Among College Students and the Mayor's Alliance on Substance Abuse. In 2005 she received the American Psychiatric Nurses Association Media Award  for her “Keep it Real” campaign, which targeted underage drinking; in 2007 she was named Psychiatric Nurse of the Year by the Kentucky chapter of that organization. She currently serves as an elected officer on the APNA Board of Directors.

Staten teaches Family Health Promotion and Communication in the undergraduate program.
