Gia Mudd received her undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of Louisville, and master's degrees in nursing and in public health as well as her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center – Houston. The focus of her dissertation research was the development of a Spanish-language instrument to measure genetic knowledge.

Mudd teaches psychiatric mental health nursing and public health nursing courses. Her areas of research interest include the public health impact of genetic advances on vulnerable populations and improving diabetes and cardiovascular health among Hispanics through translational research of genomic discoveries.
