Joanne Matthews is the psychiatric clinical liaison between the College of Nursing and the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital. She has worked or taught in a wide variety of specialties and settings including psychiatry, obstetrics, medical-surgical, oncology, and as a poison center frontline care provider. This latter position also included professional conference planning and community education on poison prevention and treatment. She is certified in chemotherapy administration and as a specialist in poison (toxicology) information.

For the past 10 years, Matthews managed the inpatient psychiatric unit at UK Chandler Hospital and for two years an acute care unit. She is a nationally certified trainer in Non-violent Crisis Prevention Intervention and provides this training to UK hospital staff. Her current responsibilities focus on workplace communication and conflict resolution and patient care issues by assisting the nursing staff in providing safe, effective and optimal care to patients experiencing challenging psychiatric symptoms during medical admissions. In April 2008 Matthews received the UK Hospital innovation award for her work in providing patient safety resource alternatives for the nursing staff.

Matthews is a member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and is a founding and continuing member in the Kentucky Chapter.
