Research Links for Peggy Hickman Peggy Hickman is a community health nurse specialist and a
certified community development specialist. Currently, she teaches
a variety of courses about public health and population-focused
health care, community health nursing, case management, and other
related areas in both the undergraduate and graduate nursing
programs. She teaches part time in Lexington and part time at the
Center for Rural Health in Hazard, Ky.
Before beginning her teaching career, she worked for several
health departments as a public health nurse, OB-GYN nurse
practitioner, pediatric nurse practitioner, STD epidemiologist,
and maternal-child health consultant. She also worked in
hospital-based settings in adult medical-surgical nursing and in
pediatric research. Prior to coming to UK,
she was a member of the faculty and administration at several
other universities and served as a nursing and community
development consultant for a variety of health care and mission
organizations.
Some of Hickman's interests are international health, rural
health care, and health promotion/disease prevention. She has
served as a visiting professor at two universities in Thailand and
provided consultation to universities in New Zealand and
Australia. Her current research focuses on developing and testing
interdisciplinary community interventions to promote health and
prevent illness or injury in rural populations. Some of her recent
research projects were funded by the National
Coalition on Breast Cancer, the National Cancer Institute, and the
National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. |
