Research Links for Dorothy Brockopp Dorothy Brockopp received her B.S.N., M.S.N.,
and Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Before coming to UK,
she chaired the problem-based
nursing program at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. She
is currently a professor
in the UK College of Nursing and holds a joint appointment in
the the Department of Anesthesiology at the College of Medicine.
Brockopp's
doctoral research, psychological sequelae of a life-threatening
illness, was funded by a National Research Service Award. She
has been principal investigator on 11 funded studies that
expanded on her doctoral work and co-investigator on four funded
studies in associated areas. Currently she is principal
investigator on a project designed to increase the use of
complementary approaches to health care to diminish cancer pain
and a study to examine psychospiritual issues among women with
breast cancer. Her work on the management of acute cancer pain
includes the negative effects of bias among health care
professionals when managing pain.
Brockopp's
research on behavioral issues related to chronic and
life-threatening illness has appeared in a variety of journals
including Oncology Nursing Forum, Journal of Palliative Care,
Cancer Nursing, and the British Journal of Nursing.
She presented her latest work, along with two colleagues,
related to women's advancement in academic science and
engineering, at the Ninth International Interdisciplinary
Congress on Women, in Seoul, Korea in June 2005. Their paper
“Creating Chemistry for Change” (Brockopp, Isaacs and Bischoff,
2006) is published in the Journal of Women in Educational
Leadership.
She is first author on 25 publications and co-author
on 13. She has presented at eight national and 18 international
conferences.
She
co-authored an undergraduate research text, Fundamentals
of Nursing Research, for which she received a Book of the Year
award from the American Journal of Nursing. In 1996, the
University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital Department of Nursing named their
Annual Nursing Research Award after her. She has received the
Carolyn A. Williams Award for Excellence in Research. In 2004
she received the prestigious
Sarah Bennet Holmes award from the University of Kentucky Women's
Forum for her outstanding work in promoting the growth and
well-being of women at UK and throughout Kentucky.
Brockopp served for seven years as a research consultant for
nursing within UK Chandler Hospital and served for two years as associate
director of International Affairs at UK. She chaired the
University of Kentucky President's Commission on Women from
2003-2006.
Brockopp teaches courses in research methods and guides
students in the College's D.N.P. (clinical) and Ph.D. (research)
programs.
