Ph.D. Student Research

The goal of the Ph.D. program at the College of Nursing is to prepare students to conduct clinical research by developing and testing mid-range theories for the generation of new knowledge applicable to nursing practice.

Interdisciplinary research opportunities are emphasized. Invaluable mentoring by faculty members and collegial interactions among doctoral students support the development of nurse researchers.

  SNRS Symposium
Established research programs such as the RICH Heart Program and the Tobacco Policy Research Program provide students with the opportunity to work with mentors on long-term studies while working on their dissertations and developing their own research agendas.

Research assistantships are available, and students are supported in applying for extramural funding in the form of grants, scholarships, and fellowships. Students also are assisted in submitting their research and course projects for publication or presentation at conferences.

Marla De Jong (Ph.D. 2005) had 14 publications and 11 presentations and was awarded a grant from the Tri-Service Nursing Program while a student in the Ph.D. program.
