INROADS into Pain
Management:
Improving Nursing Response for Optimal Analgesics and
Drug Safety
Empowering Nurses to be Better Pain
Managers
Schedule
below
Where: Teleconference
Contact hours: 1.2 KBN (50 minute) and 1.0 ANCC (60 minute)
Purpose:
Treatment of pain
continues to become more complex as the range of
medications available to treat pain is rapidly
expanding, and includes agents with a wide range of
physiological effects. This spectrum of drugs offers new
ways to balance safety and effectiveness and opens the
door to a more individualized approach to pain therapy,
where regimens can be tailored to each patient's needs.
Key to this process is an understanding of pain
physiology and the corresponding rationale for
multi-modal strategies that target different mechanisms
within the pain pathway.
This, in turn, requires that health care professionals
employ a more comprehensive approach to patient
evaluation, looking at the full range of factors
short-term clinical status, medical history, and
emotional and functional needs that should influence
drug selection.
INROADS
is designed to provide the knowledge and resources for
nurses to become more informed, active pain managers by
addressing both the pharmacologic and clinical
considerations for optimizing analgesic therapy through
case-based learning.
Part 1:
Navigating the Maze of Pain Medication
Focuses on the physiology of pain and the corresponding basis
for the pharmacology of pain medications.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able
to:
Explain the
mechanistic basis of pain
Identify the
chemical mediators of pain and their role in pain processing
Review the
pharmacology and therapeutic rationale for major classes of pain
medications
Discuss
multimodal therapy as a means to balance analgesia and adverse
events
Part 2:
Dosing for the Individual: Maximizing Safety and Effectiveness
Focuses on patient-
and practice-related considerations for tailoring pain regimens
to best meet the needs of each patient.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this
activity, participants should be able to:
Apply
critical thinking for individualized pain care that incorporates
a comprehensive view of the patient's condition
Identify
vital factors for tailoring pain regimens to provide safest,
most effective therapy
Review
pharmacology and therapeutic profiles of major classes of pain
medications
Discuss
multimodal therapy as a means to achieve effective analgesia and
prevent side effects
Target audience:
Nurses, nurse
practitioners, nursing students, health care workers
working in a hospital setting
