Maria Dietrich, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
Post-Doctoral Scholar
College of Health Sciences
Maria Dietrich is a Post-Doctoral Scholar in the Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders within the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph Stemple. Her responsibilities are primarily research oriented. Further, she oversees activities of Dr. Stemple’s Vocal Dynamics Lab.
Dr. Dietrich completed her Ph.D. in Communication Science and Disorders in 2008 at the University of Pittsburgh under the mentorship of Dr. Katherine Verdolini. Leading up to her Ph.D., she received a M.A. degree in Speech Language Pathology in 2003 from Kent State University and a degree in Diplom-Heilpädagogik in 2001 from Universität zu Köln in Germany.
Research Interests
Dr. Dietrich’s primary area of research is the relation between psychobiological processes and voice disorders. Within the broader context of mind and body research, she is in particular interested in the biological and behavioral expression of psychological stress in the larynx under consideration of individual trait differences such as personality. Dr. Dietrich employs psychobiological methodologies to uncover the central and peripheral processes and ultimately mechanisms that control vocalization under various conditions. Ultimately, her research hopes to inform education and prevention programs as well as treatment approaches based on a patient’s psychobiological profile.
Clinical
Dr. Dietrich has completed her Clinical Fellowship Year at the University of Pittsburgh Voice Center under the mentorship of Dr. Jackie Gartner-Schmidt. She holds the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology since 2004.
