H1N1

The campus is working to educate students, faculty and staff about H1N1 flu in an effort to prevent its spread. The most attention will be given to undergraduate students and the professional programs will need to handle dissemination of information at the local level.  There are two documents that you should review: a FAQ for students and another for faculty. Programs should distribute the student FAQ to students enrolled in the programs.

Excused Absences for Influenza-like Illness

UHS has reversed its policy of not providing verification of excused absences due to the H1N1 situation.

Students who are diagnosed by a clinician as having influenza-like illness and are advised to stay home for a minimum of 3-7 days shall be issued an excused absence form (authenticated with a UHS seal).

The Strategic Plan is available for review on the SharePoint website. The file is titled: "REVISED Strategic Plan draft with kick-off comments." Please send all comments to Rena Murphy by September 15th. Staff and Faculty Councils will review in September and we hope to have a faculty vote to approve in October.

Rehabilitation Sciences Chair Transition

On September 1st, Judy Page stepped down from the role of chair and Janice Kuperstein assumed the position. We welcome Janice to this new administrative position and wish her success. We also want to offer our sincere thanks to Judy for all she did in this important role over a number of years. She survived restricting of the departments and growth in programs and research. She was responsible for a significant number of new hires given the growth in positions over the last five years. She approached problems and opportunities with creativity and developed some of the policies and processes that we continue to use.  Thank you for your service, Judy. We appreciate your time and talent.

A Division within a Division

The Clinical Laboratory Science program had an external review focused on the undergraduate program. One of the recommendations was to separate CLS from the Reproduction Graduate Programs to strengthen the med tech degree. To that end, we are dividing the division into two programs — Clinical Laboratory Sciences and Reproductive Sciences. Linda Gorman will serve as the CLS program director and Jay Ko has agreed to serve as the Repro. program director. We continue to work out the details of how these two programs can co-exist given shared faculty. We will spend this year working on processes to insure success in both programs.

Your Attendance Matters

One of the primary responsibilities of faculty members beyond the research and teaching missions is to be active in service. The very first place for this service activity is within the College. It is an expectation that faculty will attend division, department, and college faculty meetings. We need input from all our faculty to move the College forward.  Please send an email to Marie if you are unable to attend a faculty meeting and include the reason why. We will begin reporting attendance to the College faculty meetings as they do in the University Senate: Present, Absent, Excused Absence.

Staff are always invited to attend and division and program directors should allow staff to attend and to take lunch at an alternate time.

Additional Holiday Benefit for Employees

Last year, the University of Kentucky provided December 24, 2008, as paid holiday/bonus day leave time for eligible faculty and staff. This year, in lieu of setting a firm date for that holiday as December 24, 2009, UK is allowing all eligible faculty and staff to take an additional holiday/bonus day (in addition to existing bonus days between December 25, 2009 and January 1, 2009) on a date of the employee's choice.
