H1N1 Update

Spread

Across CDC Region 4
Kentucky and the other southeast states

The CDC releases a weekly Influenza Surveillance Report that maps the spread of H1N1, on a six-point scale, within each of the 10 CDC regions. In CDC Region 4, which includes Kentucky and the other southeast states, only Kentucky and Arkansas report H1N1 activity below the highest level (widespread). Kentucky and Arkansas register regional levels, the second highest level of severity. We must remain vigilant in our adoption and reinforcement of preventative measures.

Campus Activity

The University Health Service continues to see elevated numbers of students, the majority of whom did not present the full array of flu-like symptoms. To date, we have been spared the fate of Washington State University, which has reported cases numbering in the thousands. We have not received reports, by word of mouth (perhaps not the proper metaphor in this context) or through the Academic Alert system, of significant class absenteeism across colleges and courses.

Ongoing Planning

Non-Instructional Operations

Campus planning continues to focus primarily on the continuity of essentials services, those infrastructural services for which the UK community could not tolerate even a day?s disruption.  These services include the maintenance of residence halls and dining facilities; clinics; laboratory and other facilities in which live animals are kept; utilities (data, communications, environmental, etc.); and safety. A master plan for the continuity of operations is being updated and refined, and academic units will be contacted soon to assist in the development of an updated master plan.

The deployment of fixed hand sanitizer stations in campus buildings is in progress.  With the assistance of college personnel, we have identified locations in all campus buildings for the placements of hand sanitizer stations. The completion of this project has been hampered by vendor shortages due to the spike in demand.  Custodial staff will maintain all installed stations.

Instructional Operations

Local reports on the severity and duration of illness attributable to H1N1, corroborated by national data, indicate that cases of H1N1 flu require an exclusion (self-isolation) period of 3-5 days.  We have not yet seen a general trend of H1N1 cases that persist for more than one week, suggesting that the disruption of classes as faculty take ill may be manageable.  (Of course, there have been reports of isolated cases that require hospitalization, mostly among individuals who have chronic conditions of compromised health.  H1N1 has also claimed lives in Kentucky and elsewhere, again in populations with prior health exigencies.)  However, we continue to plan for greater exigency, in particular for circumstances that would require the widespread deployment of alternate delivery models for instruction (i.e., web-mediated), and we will share those plans with you shortly.

Feedback from deans on the use of the Academic Alert system suggests that we need to refine the threshold rate for class absenteeism that would prompt a faculty person to send an Academic Alert message. The current threshold (a class absentee rate of 10% or more over a one-week period) is too low. I suggest we recalibrate the threshold to 25%.

Action Item

Faculty should report class absentee rates of 25% or more over a one-week period using the Academic Alert system:

Idea Festival 2009

Some of the world's biggest dreamers, thinkers, and innovators will be descending upon the Commonwealth of Kentucky September 23-26 to take part in IdeaFestival (IF) 2009.

Started right here in Lexington in 2000, the IF has grown into one of the world's premier showcases of creativity and discovery. The University of Kentucky has sponsored IF since the program's inception, partnering with the Kentucky Science and Technology Corporation to bring this first-class array of talent to the state.

UK is proud to sponsor the festival again this year. IF will be held in Louisville and features another all-star cast of speakers and presenters. From renowned cuisine expert Anthony Bourdain to New York Times writer Dana Canedy to some of UK's own experts like Phil Kraemer, the Chellgren Endowed Chair for Undergraduate Excellence and a Professor of Psychology, and Diane M. Snow, Professor and Endowed Chair at the UK Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center, the IdeaFestival will feature something for everyone.

IF will also present the Curry Stone Design Prize, which started at UK, and is a $100,000 annual prize awarded to an individual or group for developing and implementing a visionary design solution that address social justice needs in the area of access to shelter, health care, clean air, clean water, clean food, education, and peace.

If you have some time, I hope you travel to Louisville to enjoy this special opportunity to learn from some of the world's most innovative thinkers. UK faculty, staff, and, students receive a 15 percent discount for All-Access Passes and most individual events (use promotion code "SIF09" to receive the discount).
