H1N1

The campus is working to educate students, faculty and staff about H1N1 flu in an effort to prevent its spread. The most attention will be given to undergraduate students and the professional programs will need to handle dissemination of information at the local level.  There are two documents that you should review: a FAQ for students and another for faculty. Programs should distribute the student FAQ to students enrolled in the programs.

Faculty  members are urged to be flexible with attendance policies so we can insure that students who have the flu stay home.  Administration also asked that faculty members consider having a back up instructor for classes in case a faculty member gets the flu. Faculty are also asked to use a campus alert website that has been set up to report unusual numbers (~10% or more) of class absences and/or anecdotal information (student communication stating they have the flu) to the Office of the Provost: www.uky.edu/UGS/alert/early_alert.html.

The College response will include the following:

  • Distribution of hand sanitizer to students
  • Posting information about H1N1 on TV screens and bulletin board (completed)
  • Meeting with Division & Program directors to discuss CHS plan
  • Distribution of Lysol to housekeeping for door knobs and table surfaces
  • Distribution of hand sanitizer, Lysol, and masks to the academic programs

Excused Absences for Influenza-like Illness

UHS has reversed its policy of not providing verification of excused absences due to the H1N1 situation.

Students who are diagnosed by a clinician as having influenza-like illness and are advised to stay home for a minimum of 3-7 days shall be issued an excused absence form (authenticated with a UHS seal).

Although absences for other diagnoses may qualify as an excused absence, the UHS will only issue excused absence forms routinely for influenza-like illness.

The UHS health provider staff will instruct students to e-mail their instructors immediately, indicating that they have been diagnosed as having influenza-like illness and have been advised to stay home for a minimum of 3-7 days, and then bring their UHS excused absence form to their instructors upon their return to classes.

Big Blue Goes Green: A Sustainability Showcase

Students, faculty, staff and the community are invited to learn what UK is doing in support of sustainability at the third annual Big Blue Goes Green: A Sustainability Showcase to be held September 14-25. The event is organized and sponsored by the UK President's Sustainability Advisory Committee and the Office of the Vice President for Facilities Management.

This year, instead of a one-day showcase in the Student Center, the event will be held over a two-week period and will include an interactive, online showcase of various campus sustainability initiatives, programs, and research as well as numerous sustainability events hosted throughout the UK campus and the city of Lexington.

Some of the highlights of Big Blue Goes Green 2009 include:

  • Sept. 16 – Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., will speak on the future of our world, both environmentally and economically, and how the two have a powerful tie. Tickets are free to all UK students, $5 for UK faculty and staff, and $10 for the general public; group discounts available. For tickets, contact Stephanie Fisher at (859) 257-8427.
  • Sept. 14 – Attend the "Sustainability 101" workshop and find out what sustainability is and what you can do in support of sustainability.
  • Sept. 17 & 23 – Visit the "open house" events at some of the laboratories at the UK Center for Manufacturing and view various exhibits to learn about sustainable manufacturing.
  • Sept. 18 – Tour Cane Run Watershed and learn about this important water resource contained within parts of Fayette and Scott counties in central Kentucky.
  • Sept. 18 – Tour the Center for Applied Energy Research and learn how they are fulfilling their mission to focus on the optimal use of Kentucky's and the nation's energy resources.
  • Sept. 22 – Hear from the students and faculty who have constructed a solar home and get a sneak peak at the house before it is transported to Washington, D.C., for the 2009 U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.

The President's Sustainability Advisory Committee is also publishing its inaugural edition of UK's Sustainability Newsletter on September 4.

Click here for a more complete listing of events and to retrieve your copy of UK's first sustainability newsletter. Visit the UK President's Sustainability Advisory Committee Web site at www.sustainability.uky.edu.
