Memo from Lee Edgerton, Academic Ombud

Dear Fellow Faculty Members:

Below you will find a series of links that may be helpful as you prepare for your classes this fall. Although experienced faculty may have addressed most issues in past syllabi and plan for only minor changes, please be aware that the rules on dead week have changed. The new rules severely restrict scheduling of quizzes, exams, and due dates for projects during dead week. To save both you and me grief at the end of the semester, please review these rules. If you plan to schedule any evaluative activities during dead week, please review the new rules.

Please note that these guidelines for instructors come with references to the University Senate Rules (SR) as appropriate. Michelle Sohner, Assistant to the Ombud, and I try to keep the references current, but we will not be offended if you call our attention to other pertinent rules that we have overlooked or cited inappropriately.

Best wishes to you for an enjoyable and intellectually stimulating semester. If you have any questions or concerns about any of the issues listed below or if the Office of Academic Ombud Services may be of assistance to you or your students, please call (257-3737), drop by (109 Bradley Hall) or visit our Web site.

(You can also access them via UK's main Web site, http://www.uky.edu, select the "Site Index," choose the letter "S" and then select "Student Rights and Responsibilities." Once there, look under "Student Conduct").

Instances of student plagiarism have increased in recent years. A link to a paper "Plagiarism: What is it?" may be found at the Ombud web site. The Ombud Web site also includes a link to a Prentice Hall Companion Website "Understanding Plagiarism." This site includes brief quizzes on related topics. As a means to define expectations, you may wish to include these or other appropriate citations in your course syllabi.

2009 Hall of Fame Induction, Scholarship Dinner and Scholarship Scramble

The Hall of Fame and Scholarship Dinner will be held at Central Baptist Hospital on Thursday, October 8th (time TBD). We hope to have as many faculty, donors and alumni present as possible to show the level of support and dedication we have for our students.

We're also resuming the annual golf tournament, but now with a focus on raising money for student scholarships. Our goal is to raise $25,000 this year, however we need faculty and staff participation in order to reach that goal. Here are some ideas how you can help make this event a success:

  • Bring a foursome to the event ($100/player or $350/foursome)
  • Ask friends/business owners you know to be a major sponsor of the event (packages from $1,500 to $8,000) - or share potential sponsor names with committee members. We'll be happy to ask them!
  • Ask your colleagues to go in together to sponsor a hole ($500) or play (hole sponsorship + foursome = $800).

The event will be on October 9th at Griffin Gate Golf Club. The shotgun start begins at 8 a.m. (breakfast and lunch provided). The goal is to raise funds to support deserving students financially. Scholarships can have a major impact on students and this is a fun and easy way to help in the cause - plus, your contribution is tax deductible.

If you have any questions, please contact Allison Horseman at 218-0563 or ahors3@uky.edu.

45th Anniversary Planning

Planning has already begun for the 45th anniversary of the college in 2011. During an initial meeting, it was suggested that we poll alumni, friends, donors, staff, faculty and students to find out people would prefer to celebrate this occasion. Please click on the link below to provide feedback on this topic. The survey should only take about one to two minutes and will help us greatly in the planning process.
