UK Chandler Hospital Topping Out Celebration

Flier

The UK Chandler Hospital Topping Out Celebration will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Over 7,000 people are expected to attend the event. This celebration will directly impact faculty, staff and students in the Wethington Building. Rose Street will be closed from Washington Avenue to Limestone from Tuesday September 29th through Thursday October 1st. The loading dock adjacent to the Wethington Building will be closed during this time. We are working with UK Healthcare administrators to find alternate delivery routes and patient drop offs for this time frame. More information will follow as soon as logistics are resolved. Please see Vicki Riddell-Peavler with any questions or concerns.

2009 Hall of Fame Induction, Scholarship Dinner and Scholarship Scramble

The Hall of Fame and Scholarship Dinner will be held at Central Baptist Hospital on Thursday, October 8th (time TBD). We hope to have as many faculty, donors and alumni present as possible to show the level of support and dedication we have for our students.

We're also resuming the annual golf tournament, but now with a focus on raising money for student scholarships. Our goal is to raise $25,000 this year, however we need faculty and staff participation in order to reach that goal. Here are some ideas how you can help make this event a success:

  • Bring a foursome to the event ($100/player or $350/foursome)
  • Ask friends/business owners you know to be a major sponsor of the event (packages from $1,500 to $8,000) - or share potential sponsor names with committee members. We'll be happy to ask them!
  • Ask your colleagues to go in together to sponsor a hole ($500) or play (hole sponsorship + foursome = $800).

The event will be on October 9th at Griffin Gate Golf Club. The shotgun start begins at 8 a.m. (breakfast and lunch provided). The goal is to raise funds to support deserving students financially. Scholarships can have a major impact on students and this is a fun and easy way to help in the cause - plus, your contribution is tax deductible.

45th Anniversary Planning

Planning has already begun for the 45th anniversary of the college in 2011. During an initial meeting, it was suggested that we poll alumni, friends, donors, staff, faculty and students to find out people would prefer to celebrate this occasion. Please click on the link below to provide feedback on this topic. The survey should only take about one to two minutes and will help us greatly in the planning process.

Research Study on Arm Use in Women With and Without Breast Cancer

Researchers at the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences are conducting a research study on arm use in women with and without breast cancer. The purpose is to learn about arm motion, strength and use of the arm and shoulder among women who have had breast cancer treatment and compare that information with women who have not had any history of breast cancer or shoulder injury.

You may be able to participate if you are:

  • a female ages 30 to 69;
  • with or without a history of breast cancer and treatment; and
  • no history of shoulder, neck or thoracic surgery.

Notes from the Business Office

A change to the Business Procedures Manual B-3-2-2 DAV Procedure and discretionary policy has been made to increase the limit for flowers for funeral or illness to $75.00 plus delivery fees and the limit for memorial gifts to $75.00. Additionally, B-3-2-2 has been updated to delete several items that are now purchased by the procurement card, correct references and add links.

Please pass this information along and let Vicki Riddell-Peavler know if you have any questions.

Accreditation Generalist Site Visitors Sought

The following announcement is from ASAHP-President Elect Dean Gregory Frazer (Duquesne University) and from Dean Hugh Bonner (State University of New York Upstate Medical University) who serve as ASAHP representatives to the CAAHEP Board of Directors. Any ASAHP member who has questions should contact Dean Frazer at (412) 396-5303 or by e-mail at frazer@duq.edu. He and Dean Bonner appreciate your help regarding this matter.

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is seeking nominees to participate in our upcoming training seminar to become a generalist site visitor. Eventually we hope to have a "pool" of trained generalist site visitors that our CoAs can call upon. ("Generalist site visitors are site visitors who are not associated with the professional area of the program that is being evaluated.)

We will be hosting our first training workshop on September 11-12, 2009 in New Orleans and CAAHEP will be paying the travel expenses for 25 participants to attend that workshop.

If you are interested in this training please send us an email that gives us your contact information and answers the following questions:

  1. What is your experience in accreditation? Have you had involvement with self-study reviews, site visits?
  2. Have you ever done a site visit outside of your professional discipline?
  3. Would you be comfortable interviewing physicians, college presidents, provosts or deans?

Also, in order to be eligible for the training, individuals must have completed CAAHEP's site visitor quiz (available at www.caahep.org).

In order to be considered, they will need to hear from any nominee no later than August 3rd. Please email your response to Kathleen Megivern.
