Volunteers Needed for
Common Reading Experience

Color of Water Cover

UK has now instituted a Common Reading Experience for its incoming class of fall 2009. All incoming students have been asked to read the book, The Color of Water by James McBride, and there will be group discussions on Tuesday, August 25 from 10-11 a.m. led by discussion leaders (faculty and staff). 360 discussion leaders are needed in total, but only 110 have volunteered so far. This is an opportunity for all those who normally do not come into contact with first year students to interact with a small group in a meaningful conversation.

Details on signing up may be found at the following site: www.uky.edu/CommonReading.

Research Study Volunteers Needed

Researchers at the College of Health Sciences are conducting a study to establish normal performance values for muscle testing of the arms and legs. A new muscle testing device has been developed for use with people who have progressive muscle weakness. Establishing normal performance values will give physical therapists a standard for performance comparison on these muscle tests.

You may be able to participate if you:

  • are 18 years old or older; and
  • have no current physical condition that will limit you from performing isometric testing of the muscles around the shoulder or knee.

If you meet these qualifications for the study, please contact Robert A. (Tony) English, investigator and research coordinator, at (859) 323-1100 ext. 80834 or tenglish@uky. Back to Top

Last Call for Professor Superlatives

In August 2009, Kentucky Monthly magazine will honor professors teaching at Kentucky colleges or universities in a fun and unique way. Much like the senior superlatives that are an annual high school tradition, Kentucky Monthly's Professor Superlatives will recognize those one-of-a-kind professors who are making college memorable for students across the Commonwealth.

Below are descriptions of the superlative awards and a ballot. If you know a professor teaching at a Kentucky college or university who deserves to be recognized, please complete and e-mail the ballot to Allison Horseman by June 14. The Kentucky Monthly editorial staff will review the nominations and select the winners. The winners will be notified by June 19 and will be asked to participate in a photo shoot to appear in the August 2009 issue of Kentucky Monthly magazine.

NOTE: Staff and other faculty can nominate professors as well.

  • Most Compassionate
This award will honor the professor who is always willing to listen or lend a helping hand to his/her students.
  • Most Likely to be Quoted
Whether it is a unique catch-phrase or valuable words of wisdom, this professor will be quoted by students for years to come.
  • Most School Spirit
It doesn't matter if it is a football game or an academic team competition, this professor rivals the captain of the cheerleading team's school spirit.
  • Most Unique Resume
This award will honor the professor with the most diverse work background.
  • Most Unforgettable
Fifty years from now, students will still be talking about this one-of-a-kind professor.

This stylish professor goes beyond the standard uniform of a wool blazer and corduroy.
  • Biggest Class Clown
You know what they say. Once a class clown, always a class clown.
  • Biggest Storyteller
This professor always has a colorful story to share.
  • The Indiana Jones Award
This professor may look at home in a college classroom but on the weekends, he/she transforms into a thrill-seeking world explorer.
  • Method to the Madness Award
Some say that a messy office is a sign of an ordered mind. If that is true, this professor is certainly a genius.
  • The True Classic
That professor who fits the stereotype presented in films such as The Paper Chase, Legally Blonde or even, heaven forbid, Animal House.
  • Most Unusual Collection
This award will honor the professor with the most unusual collection in his/her office.
