Kingston Award Nominations

The Kingston Award was established in recognition of Richard “Dick” Kingston’s creativity and innovation in education.  The award consists of a small monetary grant, an individual plaque and medal, and the addition of the recipient’s name to a master plaque.  This award initially (1984) was instituted as a means for the college to "recognize, reward, and encourage innovation in the classroom, laboratory, and clinic.”

The Dick Kingston Award was originally developed to recognize a creative, innovative, original teaching project or “product” that directly supports the academic focus of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) and has been shown to be directly beneficial to CHS students.  In 1991 the focus of the Kingston Award was broadened to also recognize outstanding contributions and/or long term consistent excellence in teaching.

Please make sure that our faculty are recognized for their contribution to education by submitting a nomination. Click here for the nomination form.

A list of previous recipients is available at:

Effgen Honored by APTA

Photo: Dr. Susan EffgenDr. Susan Effgen was recently honored by the pediatric section of the American Physical Therapy Association for her outstanding contribution to pediatric physical therapy. Dr. Effgen was the first recipient of this award, which is now called the Susan Effgen Advocacy Award.

Dr. Effgen has led the APTA Pediatric Section in the area of advocacy since the the beginning of her career as a pediatric physical therapist when she testified at federal hearings on PL 94-142, the original law to provide education for children with disabilities, in 1977.

She has significantly shaped the practice of physical therapy by influencing health policy and developing high standards and competencies for practice in early intervention and the schools.  She has led the profession in the development of a pediatrics research focus and in developing competencies for PT’s in early intervention. She has over 60 publications, over 50 national and international presentations and has mentored many faculty and clinicians as a senior faculty member, a co-collaborator, and researcher in the areas of practice and advocacy.

Through all of this service to the section, she has continued to represent the pediatric physical therapist at federal hearings on legislation affecting provision of PT in the schools in 1982, throughout the 1990’s and was present at the White House for the signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) amendments in 1997.

Congratulations!
