ˇ
Congratulations to Chelsea Oswald, pre-physical therapy student, who is recipient of the 2012-13 SEC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year! Chelsea is a junior who is completing an undergraduate research experience in Dr. Brian Noehren’s lab this spring. According to Dr. Noehren, Chelsea is an amazing track and field athlete, unbelievable student (holding a 4.0 GPA), and incredibly nice person; between all her commitments for athletics and education, she still finds time to spend about 10 hours per week in lab to gain research experience. Chelsea plans to return to the Noehren lab for more research experience next year as a senior. See the UK Now article on Chelsea here. Ms. Mallory Johnson, PAS student from the Class of 2013 was accepted to the Norwalk Hospital/Yale School of Medicine's post-graduate surgical residency program. The Norwalk Hospital/Yale Physician Assistant Surgical Residency is an intensive 12-month program conducted jointly by the Departments of Surgery at Norwalk Hospital and Yale School of Medicine. This program has the distinction of being the first graduate residency in the nation designed exclusively for surgical PAs. The Norwalk/Yale program has maintained its reputation over the years through strong staff commitment, the caliber of its students, and a record of graduates’ successes all across the country. The program’s focus is on in-depth education reinforced by hands-on experience. Residents divide their year between Norwalk Hospital and Yale School of Medicine. The program is designed so that the curriculum at one institution effectively complements the other. Congratulations to Mallory! UK Healthcare has chosen Linda Allen, in the Office of Student Affairs, as its nominee for the 2013 Red Cross Hero of the Year. The Heroes campaign recognizes individuals throughout Central Kentucky who make a positive difference for the less fortunate in their communities. Linda was nominated for her extensive volunteerism at Parkside Manor and Shady Lawn Personal Care Homes in Cynthiana. These facilities serve residents with mental illness, many of whom arrive at the homes from a hospital, homeless shelter or family residence where care is no longer a possibility. Linda continuously organizes clothing, furniture & food drives for the homes and spends countless hours every week visiting residents. Linda selflessly dedicates financial and in-kind collateral to the homes for the benefit of patients and makes sure every person receives attention on their birthday and has a visitor if they are admitted to a hospital. Most importantly, Linda opens her heart and offers her friendship to many people who have no one else to call a friend. CHS is proud of Linda and excited that UK Healthcare has chosen her as a very deserving nominee. The 2013 Red Cross Hero of the Year will be announced at a dinner on May 16 at Griffin Gate Marriott. Please extend your congratulations to Linda!
