Dr. Tim Butterfield and Emily Brownell, Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer were awarded a research grant from the Louis R. Osternig Research Endowment through the NATA Foundation's Grant Program. The grant title is "Utilization of Massage to Limit Disuse Atrophy and Enhance Regrowth in Skeletal Muscle," and provides funding of $985.

Dr. Charlotte Peterson recently served as an external reviewer for the newly funded Centre for Integrated Research into Musculoskeletal Ageing (CIMA) in Liverpool, England. Dr. Peterson, a CIMA international advisory board member, served as a muscle expert alongside colleagues specializing in bone and cartilage research. CIMA is funded by the Medical Research Council-Arthritis Research UK, which is comparable to the U.S. NIH-National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

The CSD Division will be hosting Dr. Karen Banai from Haifa University on Monday July 30. Dr. Banai’s research interests include early literacy (perception and anchoring), auditory plasticity (learning and development in typical and clinical populations), speech-evoked brainstem responses and reading and learning disabilities. She will present some of her research on the 30^th beginning at 4:30 PM (click here for flier). There will be a reception for Dr. Banai at the home of Dr. Gilson Capilouto immediately after and all are welcome. RSVP to Dr. Gilson Capilouto.

Students continue to knock on our door and inquire about undergraduate research opportunities for summer & fall. We’ve been on a roll with providing opportunities for these students; let’s keep up the momentum! For those faculty mentoring undergraduates in a 'for credit' research opportunity this fall, please have students register for the HSE 595 (variable hours 1-3) Section 003. Please contact Gilson Capilouto or Cynthia Byars if you have any questions.

Undergraduate Research Enhancement Awards Available

The CHS Office of Research is pleased to announce the availability of Undergraduate Research Enhancement Awards (UREAs) for faculty mentoring undergraduates in research. Four UREAs of $500 each are available for Fall 2012. PIs could, for example, use these funds to provide students with a small stipend, support student travel to present undergraduate research work, or to purchase lab supplies necessary for their respective research programs.

To apply for an award, please send an email to Cynthia Byars with a brief description of your work with undergraduates as well as a breakdown of how you plan to use the award. The deadline for applications is August 1, 2012. Applications will be reviewed by committee and awards will be announced by September 1.
