Back to Top CHS to Host Two APS Undergraduate Research Fellows Summer 2012
Congratulations to Zakkary Hardyniec and Aman Shah for receiving a paid
summer fellowship available through the American Physiological Society (APS).
The APS sponsors a national program offering fellowships based on academic merit
of the student, quality of proposed research experience, and mentor
availability. Nationwide, 24 research fellowships were awarded, 3 of which
are being hosted by UK investigators, and of those, 2 are with the College of
Health Sciences. Zakkary (Alma College, Wayne, MI), and Aman (University of KY)
will work under the mentorship of Dr. Charlotte Peterson & Dr. Esther
Dupont-Versteegden (respectively). Students continue to
knock on our door and inquire about undergraduate research opportunities for
summer & fall. We’ve been on a roll with providing opportunities for these
students; let’s keep up the momentum! If you have an opportunity or
potential opportunity for summer or fall, please email

information to be posted on the
UGR Current Opportunities webpage. Thank you for supporting the Office
of Undergraduate Research! Staff Council is now accepting
nominations for three new Staff Council members. Each member's term will
last three years in duration beginning July 1, 2012. All nominations
should be sent to Kristie Bruner no later
than Monday, May 7th. For more information regarding the
expectations of Staff Council members please feel free to contact
Kristie Bruner. Rockcastle Regional Hospital will host its annual golf scramble on June 27 at Cedar Rapids Golf Course in Mount Vernon, KY. Please click here for more information. Back to Top2012-2013 Education Enhancement Grants AwardedThe purpose of the Education Enhancement Grants
is to “provide CHS faculty with resources to support the development and
implementation of innovative and educational initiatives to improve student
learning.” These grants provide up to $3,000 to complete proposed projects.
At the conclusion of the project period, awardees provide a written report
of project outcomes to be posted on the Academic Affairs website. In
addition, recipients prepare a blitz report for presentation at a spring
faculty meeting. Michelle Butina, Anne Olson, and Lynn English, along with
Gilson Capilouto made up the grant review committee. The grants represented an interesting and exciting
array of topics and disciplines. Recipients and Titles of funded grants for

Technology (UKIT) is upgrading both main campus and UK HealthCare employee
voice mail during spring/summer 2012. Over the past year, a select group
tested Exchange voice mail, which alerts users of voice mail through Outlook
email. The voice mail message can be reviewed through an office
telephone, computer, cell phone, or other mobile device. In addition,
the system provides speech-to-text in the voice mail notification email.
This allows users to read voice mail when listening is unavailable. The Exchange voice mail system also
provides users the following features: ·
Remotely listening to email being
read using text to speech; ·
Calling into the system and asking
for the system to read your calendar schedule; and ·
Calling into the system and creating
meetings and writing emails orally. UKIT will migrate users from the
existing WindStream voice mail platform to Exchange voice mail without a

Innovations Conference being held at the METS Center in Erlanger, Kentucky
on May 16, 17 and 18. The Kentucky Innovations Conference
is focused on examining topics related to P-12, adult and post-secondary
education. Presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions and corporate
partners will provide conference participants the opportunity to discuss the
scholarship of teaching and learning, the latest technologies, best
practices and to share innovative instructional techniques. The
conference will begin on Wednesday morning, May 16th with
presentations focused on pedagogy and the scholarship of teaching and
learning. On Thursday, May 17th, the presentations will
focus on eLearning and instructional technologies used for teaching and
learning. Then on Friday, May 18th, the presentations will focus
on Information Technology topics. Carolyn Jarmon, Vice President of the National
Center for Academic Transformation will be joining us on Thursday, May 17 as
the featured keynote. Carolyn has given numerous presentations and been
published widely on the topics of effective delivery of student services and
distance education.. We are also planning a KyRON presentation and a CIO
panel on Friday. Information is continuously being updated on the

stages watch for information on birds-of-a-feather discussions. The registration site
