Green IdeaAs winter approaches, now is the time to have an energy audit of your home to make sure your family stays cozy through the cold months.
Call for nominations:Provost Outstanding Teaching AwardsEach year, faculty and graduate students are recognized for outstanding
teaching. The Office of the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs is seeking
nominations for these deserving faculty members and graduate teaching assistants
for distinguished teaching awards. The awards are intended to identify and
recognize individuals who demonstrate special dedication to and meritorious
success in their teaching; and to encourage awareness of the importance of
excellence in teaching. A selection committee will review the nominees, collect additional
information and recommend approximately 10 winners to the provost. Deadline
for faculty, staff and students to submit one-page initial nominations to
the faculty member's department chair is 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011. All
submissions are to be made electronically. Details about the nominating and

One hundred percent of the offerings received will go directly to serving the poor community served by Shoulder to Shoulder Global in Ecuador. Did you know that $100 provides health care to 50 children and $100 provides 3 families with clean water for 3 years? Music for Mission is an outreach of the Worship and Arts and Mission Commissions of First Presbyterian Church. Music for Mission is a unique series that offers concerts given by outstanding musical artists free of charge to the community while raising money and awareness for local and regional mission organizations. Free tickets are available at the Downtown Arts Center Box Office (141 E. Main St., 859-225-0370) OR at First Presbyterian Church (171 Market St., 859-252-1919). Ticket holders enjoy pre-seating for the event. Those not holding tickets are seated 15 minutes prior to the beginning of the concert. If you are unable to attend and desire to make a donation please make a check out to Shoulder to Shoulder Global and mail it to First Presbyterian Church, 171 Market St., Lexington, Kentucky, 40508. We have seen significant improvement in patient safety indicators, grew surgical and new patient visit volumes, and we have grown outreach programs. We have everything to look forward to as Fiscal Year 2012 advances. We know the Commonwealth desperately needs the skills and capabilities we provide, and now it’s time for everyone who contributes to the success of UK HealthCare and our academic medical center to be celebrated at our annual Employee/Student Appreciation Day. This event is for employees of UK HealthCare as well as employees and students from the six health profession colleges. The event will be celebrated Sept. 14 (night shift employees) and Sept. 15 (day shifts). Encourage every member of your team to take the time to be honored. D’Amico, MD, director of the Thoracic
Oncology Program at Duke University’s Comprehensive Cancer Institute, will
deliver the keynote address at the UK Markey Cancer Center’s Lung Cancer
Symposium. D’Amico’s presentation is titled “Thoracoscopic Lobectomy
for Locally Advanced Lung Cancer.” A graduate of Harvard and Columbia University,
D’Amico joins 23 other health care specialists in presenting the latest
research on the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, including the
findings of the National Lung Screening Trial. Markey Research Seminar Series

Below you will find the list of potential service event ideas that were mentioned during the Friday, August 19th Staff Business Meeting. I have divided these ideas into two categories: Monetary/Physical Donations and Volunteering Time. Please vote on one Monetary/Physical Donations idea and one Volunteering Time idea. Monetary/Physical Donation: PAWS-Paris Animal Welfare Society: wish list available and accepts monetary contributions. Ronald McDonald House Charities: wish list available and accepts monetary contributions. God’s Pantry Food Bank: competition food drive between students, faculty and staff. DanceBlue: monetary donation. Thomson-Hood Veterans Center: wish list available and accepts monetary contributions. Volunteering Time: Adopt A School: a mentoring program for a local area school; potentially Harrison Elementary School. Ronald McDonald House Charities: preparing a meal for families, a house volunteer, or volunteering at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. DanceBlue: volunteer for the night of the dance marathon; food station, general volunteer, bag check, and dancer services. Thomson-Hood Veterans Center: volunteering to assist in group activities, game night, programs, etc. Two big events coming up in October: October 1st, Veterans Picnic 10am-4pm, and the Halloween Carnival 1pm-4pm, on October 31st. Another idea that was brought up is to just save the money that we raise this academic year and use it towards Backpacks for Kids for the 2012-2013 school year. Which would mean that next summer (end of July, beginning of August) the money would be used to buy elementary school students backpacks and school supplies.
