Academic Advisor Joins Staff in Office of Student Affairs

Please extend a warm welcome to Wayne Centers, Academic Advisor in the Office of Student Affairs. Wayne earned his M.S. in Higher Education (concentration in College Student Affairs) from UK. Additionally, he has years of Student Affairs experience from several universities including Northern Kentucky University, Berea College and the University of Kentucky. If you haven’t had the chance to meet Wayne yet, feel free to stop by (Room 111A) and introduce yourself as he gets settled in.

Dr. Bridges Accepts Faculty Position in the College of Agriculture

Congratulations to Dr. Bridges on his acceptance of a faculty position with the Department of Animal and Food Sciences in the College of Agriculture here at UK. Dr. Bridges will start his new position July 1st.

UK Elder Care Lunch & Learn

Understanding Senior Housing Options: defining levels of care within your budget

The goal of this seminar is to clarify some of the confusion over housing options for our elder population. The seminar will define the various housing options available for senior community living, the care one can expect to receive at each level, the expected cost, and what is available in our area. State guidelines and licensing/certification will be discussed and defined. We will address the question, “when do I consider alternative living arrangements and how do I apply?”

PT Graduate Bringing Children’s Camp to Lexington

Stephanie Metzler Kelly, a PT graduate, and her husband, Champ, live in the Denver, Colorado area where he works as a scout for the Denver Broncos. They have started a foundation to inspire children by creating non-contact football camps – CHAMP Camp (character, heart, attitude, motivation and pride) – and inviting children who might otherwise not have a chance to attend.

They are bringing this camp to Lexington for the first time this Thursday and Friday June 23 – 24 at Bryan Station High School from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day.

Volunteer with Habitat to Benefit UK Employee

UK HealthCare is sponsoring Habitat for Humanity’s Good Health build. Volunteers are needed, especially on July 9. If you are interested in participating in this build, which will benefit an employee from UK Good Samaritan Hospital, contact Geoff Blair at wgblai2@email.uky.edu. All volunteers will receive a free UK HealthCare T-shirt.

The green-certified home being built at 2089 Polk Lane in Lexington benefits Eugenia Barrera and her three children – Noah, Jose and Sofia. Eugenia works in housekeeping at UK Good Samaritan Hospital. Each construction day is 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. You do not need your own tools or special skills to participate.

Volunteer Opportunities are listed below:

  • June 21-25: Build Blitz Week
    Three to five volunteers are needed each day to join volunteers from other partner organizations for the initial construction blitz. UK HealthCare is providing lunch and water to all volunteers on Friday, June 24.
  • Saturday, July 9: UK HealthCare Day
    Fifteen volunteers are needed for the day; UK HealthCare is providing lunch and water.

Second Annual Sports Concussion Summit 2011

The 2nd Annual Sports Concussion Summit will feature experts in the field of clinical practice dealing with the prevention and management of sport-related concussions. This conference is designed to review current practices in the prevention, recognition of concussions, and management of sport-related concussions. The conference will benefit health care professionals involved in all levels of care and training, as well as athletes, coaches, and parents.
