Effgen Awarded IES Grant

Congratulations to Dr. Susan Effgen, who recently received an award from the U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences.

Awarded for her project entitled “Relationship of Student Outcomes to Physical Therapy School Services,” is a 3-year grant for $851,822, which will also fund one UK doctoral student.

Collaborating partners/co-PIs include Sally Westcott-McCoy, PT, Ph.D., at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA; Lisa Chiarello, PT, Ph.D., at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA; and Lynn Jeffries, PT PhD, at Langston University, Langston, OK. Heather Bush, PhD, from UK is also a co-PI.

2011–2012 Education Enhancement Grants Awarded

The purpose of the Education Enhancement Grants is to “provide CHS faculty with resources to support the development and implementation of innovative and educational initiatives to improve student learning.” These grants provide up to $3,000 to conduct the projects. At the conclusion of the project period, awardees provide a written report of project outcomes to be posted on the Academic Affairs website. Past Kingston Award winners and Education Enhancement Grant recipients, Kim Campbell, Gerry Gairola and Lynn English, along with Sharon Stewart made up the grant review committee.

The grants represented an interesting and exciting array of topics and disciplines. Recipients and Titles of funded grants for 2011-2012 are as follows:

Richie Andreatta “Distance Learning Initiative for the CSD Pre-Requisite Student”
Pat Kitzman, Joan Darbee “Development of Educational Videos for Training Wheelchair Skills: From Basic to the ‘Real World’”
Geza Bruckner “Developing Student Health Navigators”

August Kick Off Retreat Date Correction

The college meeting agenda incorrectly listed the date for the August Kick Off Retreat. The retreat will be held on Thursday, August 18, ending around 2 p.m. and followed by a reception. Committee meetings will be held on Friday. Schedules will be submitted shortly.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The Office of Research is currently collecting all undergraduate research opportunities for Fall 2011 and Spring 2012. Please use the template located in the College Meeting Agenda (dated 5/20/11) and forward your opportunities to Cynthia Byars.

We encourage you to think outside the box with regards to research opportunities or needs– everything from database entry to formatting to phone surveys, etc. These opportunities will be added to the CHS Undergraduate Research website, which is currently being developed.

Staff Council Nominations

Three current staff council member’s terms will end on June 30, 2011. Therefore, nominations for staff members to fill these vacant spots are now being accepted.

Download the nomination ballot linked below, which lists all eligible staff and place a mark in the box next to the individual(s) names you would like to nominate for the positions.

Each staff member is allowed to select three people and self-nominations are allowed. Please note that this a 3-year term and all staff council members must be full time employees of the College.

Nomination deadline is Tuesday, May 24. Please submit all ballots to Meredith Houlihan either by e-mail ( or in hardcopy format to her office in Room 120.
