Congratulations to Pat and Jennifer McKeon, who welcomed their son, Robert Owen, into the world on Sunday, April 10. Robert was born at 10:59 p.m. and weighed 8 pounds 6 ounces. Mother and baby are doing well.

Free Voice Screenings Today in Celebration of World Voice Day

To celebrate World Voice Day, the UK Clinical Voice Center will offer free voice screenings on Friday, April 15 form 8 a.m. – noon to UK faculty, staff and students.

The screening will consist of one of the following: examining the voice with a state-of-art computerized assessment program, or examination of lung function for voice quality, or examination of the vocal cords with a specialized camera.

Space is limited to the first 30 people who call to register. To schedule an appointment, please call the Voice Clinic at 1-800-333-8874

This event will take place immediately following the university’s morning Commencement Ceremony and will take place in the Hyatt Regency Hotel’s Regency Ballroom.

CHS Staff Retreat

This year the College of Health Science’s Staff Retreat will be held on Friday, April 22. The events of the day are as follows:

Morning Session:

Begins at 8 a.m. in the Blazer Hall Cafe meeting room (entrance located directly across the street from Wildcat Lodge on MLK). There will be a light breakfast, which will be followed by our guest speaker, Marietta Watts. Dr. Gonzalez will address the staff and then we will have boxed lunches and prize drawings.

Afternoon Session:

We will all leave at Noon and head to Keeneland for the afternoon. Members of staff council (Meredith Houlihan, Linda Allen, Carlo Labudiong, Keturah Taylor, Kristie Bruner and Theresa Cook) will be at each entrance for you to check in and receive your admission ticket. Once inside, mingle with your co-workers and enjoy the day! All staff that attend the afternoon session must attend the morning session.

Dr. Gonzalez has graciously offered to purchase general admission tickets for the staff, therefore you must RSVP to Meredith by Wednesday, April 13 so that a ticket can be held for you.

Reds Tickets for Sale

The Ambassadors are selling tickets to the August 8 (Monday) Reds vs. Rockies game in Cincinnati as a fundraiser. The game begins at 7:10 p.m.

The tickets are limited in amount, so those interested should act now. Price details are listed below:

  • 10 tickets are for the sun/moon deck. $20 each (regular price is $25)
  • 20 tickets are for the infield box. $35 each (normally $45)

If you plan to purchase a ticket and are also interested in bus transportation for the group attending, please mention your interest at time of purchase so that this option can be looked into further.

UKIT & iTunesU Spring Multimedia Creation Workshop Series

UKIT’s Academic Technology Group and iTunesU team invite you to attend our spring multimedia creation workshop series April 19-21, featuring Apple Senior Systems Engineer Tim Matheny.

Learn how to create multimedia PDF and ePub documents, use screen and lecture capture software to present lecture material outside of class and how to podcast. Will include instruction and tips on creating and distributing educational multimedia files for desktop and mobile devices.

All sessions are hands-on and open to anyone with interest (faculty, staff, TAs/GAs, students, and visitors).

We will provide sample content for all sessions, but attendees are welcome to work with personal documents as well. Our focus will be creating multimedia files for teaching and learning, but the skills you’ll learn in these workshops can be applied to a wide variety of educational and non-educational projects.

Due to seating restrictions in the computer lab, our workshops will be limited to 20 attendees. Please RSVP to itunesu@uky.edu to reserve your seat.

    Learn how to use ePub and multimedia PDF documents in teaching and learning; what types of multimedia are supported by each format; how to create ePub and multimedia documents with Apple Pages, Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign; how ePub and multimedia documents work on mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad; how to distribute your documents (brief, demo only)
    What we will use: Simple text documents, jpg images and short video and audio clips
  • Session 2: Screen Capture and Lecture Capture
    Time: 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    Learn how to use screen capture and lecture capture videos in teaching and learning; how to record screen capture and lecture capture videos with Quicktime, Photo Booth, and Echo Personal Capture; how to do simple editing and exporting with iMovie; how screen and lecture capture videos work on mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad; how to distribute your videos (brief, demo only)
    What we will use: Webcam and microphone

    Learn how to use audio enhanced podcasts and video podcasts in teaching and learning; when to use which format and what interactive features are supported; how to use Garageband to convert a PowerPoint presentation into an audio enhanced podcast with a voiceover track; how to use iMovie to convert a PowerPoint presentation into an video podcast with a voiceover track; what your podcasts will look like on desktop and mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad; How to distribute your podcasts (brief, demo only)
    What we will use: A simple PowerPoint presentation, short audio and video files, and a microphone
  • Session 2: Distributing Content at UK and iPad 2 Demo
    Time: 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
    Learn about what options you have for distributing multimedia content at UK and how to select the right one; how to distribute multimedia content at UK using Blackboard, iTunes U, Echo 360 and Adobe Connect Pro; how your content can be accessed by others (students, colleagues, the public, etc); some of the exciting new features of the iPad 2. (This portion will be primarily presentation/demo, but you will have a chance to play with the iPad and possibly view your content on it at the end of the session.)
    What we will use: ePubs, PDFs, audio and video podcasts, screen and lecture capture videos created in the other sessions

Alzheimer’s Research Funding for Pilot Work

The Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is a National Institute on Aging-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Center (ADC). As an ADC our responsibility is to pursue research to further our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

The ADC is soliciting pilot grant applications focused on dynamic basic and clinical science studies of AD. Each of the awards is intended to provide seed funding that will facilitate the initial testing of novel hypotheses and lead to national-level funding of an expanded research plan based on the pilot work.

CHS HeartWalk Team

It’s that time of year again and we are putting together a team for the 2011 Start Heart Walk. The event is on Saturday, April 23rd at 10 a.m.

Our team is listed under UK Healthcare, College of Health Sciences and is named “Hearts & Soles.”

The walk is a wonderful way to get exercise, spend time with your coworkers & the community and bring awareness to the issues of Heart Disease.

The UK Healthcare tent will provide lunch after the walk. Last year it was barbeque.

The walk is for everyone. Please bring your family, friends and pets. Strollers are welcome. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash.

Join the team.

The goal is to raise $1,000 for our team. Help us reach that goal by making a donation on line or by check. Checks need to be made payable to The American Heart Association.
