Pat Field’s Passing

For those who are unaware, Pat Field, a former staff member in the Physician Assistant Studies program who retired last year, passed away on Monday, April 4.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 7.

Doctoral Student Receives Research Grant

Congratulations to Joanna Hoch, a student in the Rehabilitation Sciences Doctoral Program, who was recently awarded a $5,000 research grant from the American College of Sports Medicine.

Several faculty members in the college are involved in the grant, as detailed below:

Hoch JM, Mattacola CG, McKeon JM, Bush HM, Hewett TE, Gonzalez LS, Lattermann C. Serum COMP: a biomarker for acute articular cartilage damage. American College of Sports Medicine; Doctoral Student Research Grant. Funded: $5,000.00.

Graduation Recognition Reception & Mother’s Day Brunch

All faculty and staff are invited to attend a Recognition Reception and Mother’s Day Brunch in honor of our student and faculty award winners.

This event will take place immediately following the university’s morning Commencement Ceremony and will take place in the Hyatt Regency Hotel’s Regency Ballroom.

CHS Staff Retreat

This year the College of Health Science's Staff Retreat will be held on Friday, April 22. The events of the day are as follows:

Morning Session:

Begins at 8 a.m. in Nursing Building Room 511. There will be a light breakfast, which will be followed by our guest speaker, Marietta Watts. Dr. Gonzalez will address the staff and then we will have boxed lunches and prize drawings.

Afternoon Session:

We will all leave at Noon and head to Keeneland for the afternoon. Members of staff council (Meredith Houlihan, Linda Allen, Carlo Labudiong, Keturah Taylor, Kristie Bruner and Theresa Cook) will be at each entrance for you to check in and receive your admission ticket. Once inside, mingle with your co-workers and enjoy the day! All staff that attend the afternoon session must attend the morning session.

Dr. Gonzalez has graciously offered to purchase general admission tickets for the staff, therefore you must RSVP to Meredith by Wednesday, April 13 so that a ticket can be held for you.

Reds Tickets for Sale

The Ambassadors are selling tickets to the August 8 (Monday) Reds vs. Rockies game in Cincinnati as a fundraiser. The game begins at 7:10 p.m.

The tickets are limited in amount, so those interested should act now. Price details are listed below:

  • 10 tickets are for the sun/moon deck. $20 each (regular price is $25)
  • 20 tickets are for the infield box. $35 each (normally $45)

If you plan to purchase a ticket and are also interested in bus transportation for the group attending, please mention your interest at time of purchase so that this option can be looked into further.

Alzheimer’s Research Funding for Pilot Work

The Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is a National Institute on Aging-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Center (ADC). As an ADC our responsibility is to pursue research to further our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

The ADC is soliciting pilot grant applications focused on dynamic basic and clinical science studies of AD. Each of the awards is intended to provide seed funding that will facilitate the initial testing of novel hypotheses and lead to national-level funding of an expanded research plan based on the pilot work.

Faculty Training Offered for Digital Measures Software

The College of Health Sciences will be offering trainings for all faculty members to learn how to use the Digital Measures software. Digital Measures is a faculty productivity software this software is replacing the former UK Faculty Productivity Database and was used to generate the Faculty Performance Review Reports (FPRRs) used in the performance review process this past fall. It is important for all faculty members to know how to use the system since all future performance review reports will be generated using this software.

Tuesday, April 12 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Wednesday, April 13 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.

CHS HeartWalk Team

It’s that time of year again and we are putting together a team for the 2011 Start Heart Walk. The event is on Saturday, April 23rd at 10 a.m.

Our team is listed under UK Healthcare, College of Health Sciences and is named “Hearts & Soles.”

The walk is a wonderful way to get exercise, spend time with your coworkers & the community and bring awareness to the issues of Heart Disease.

The UK Healthcare tent will provide lunch after the walk. Last year it was barbeque.

The walk is for everyone. Please bring your family, friends and pets. Strollers are welcome. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash.

Join the team.

The goal is to raise $1,000 for our team. Help us reach that goal by making a donation on line or by check. Checks need to be made payable to The American Heart Association.

Please pass this along to anyone that wants to join our team. You don’t have to work here to join our team.

Kelly Feinberg Memorial Essay Contest

Faculty, please share the following with your undergraduate students:

In May 2010, UK lost one of its most dedicated and inspiring writing instructors, Kelly Feinberg, to breast cancer. The Division of Writing, Rhetoric and Digital Media would like to honor her memory with this call to all UK undergraduates for personal essays exemplifying the qualities that Kelly embodied as a writer.

The top entry will receive $100 prize and recognition at the English Department Awards Day. Deadline is April 11.

Cardinal Valley Park Stream “Great American” Cleanup

Join community volunteers in removing unsightly trash from Wolf Run Creek (and tributaries). Activities include an in-stream clean up from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. followed by a celebration at Cardinal Valley Park on Cambridge Drive.

Date Saturday, April 30, 2011
Time 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Location Cardinal Valley Park, 2077 Cambridge Dr., Lexington, KY 40504

This is a full contact water sport so participants should be prepared to:

  • Get wet from the knees down
  • Wear sturdy submersable shoes or boots (Hip waders work well)
  • Bring work gloves you don't mind getting wet
  • Bring water or a snack to tide you over (refreshments will be served at a party for volunteers immediatly following the cleanup)
  • Volunteers under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult or be part of a sponsored youth organization with an adult leader present (Teacher, Scoutmaster, Youth Minister etc.)

Clean up event will be held rain or shine. Volunteers can evaluate their own participation based on weather conditions.

Provost’s Office Requesting Faculty Honors & Awards: Due Today

The Provost’s Office is requesting information about 1) national and international faculty honors and awards in the area of research and 2) fellows.

The honor or award should be in recognition of research or all mission areas, but not for teaching, advising or service only; the emphasis is research. All faculty fellows should be included in the list as well. This information will be used to measure progress on Metric 2-5 of the UK Strategic Plan: “Increase total annual national and international recognition awards for research excellence.”

The file linked below contains a list of faculty research awards for calendar year 2010 extracted from Digital Measures (we plan to use this system annually to extract data for these types of requests). We would like to give all faculty the opportunity to add to this list if you received an award or fellow that was not entered into Digital Measures. Please review the list below and send any updates to Rena Murphy by Friday, April 8th. Please provide all information listed in the below table. Please contact Rena with questions.

STEM Education Conference

Friday, April 29, 2011 – Student Center

The Second Annual STEM Education Conference at the University of Kentucky will focus on STEM research, teaching and learning and engagement with goals of generating new partnerships and collaboration across the STEM disciplines.

Faculty, K-12 educators and STEM undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to present STEM Education related research or experiences. Presenters may choose among three formats: paper presentation, “round table” discussion, and poster presentation.

Keynote Speaker President Lee T. Todd, Jr.
“Supporting STEM Initiatives in Kentucky and Nationwide”
President Todd will discuss how we are attempting to leverage STEM initiatives to positively impact the STEM pipeline in Kentucky and across the nation. The President will speak about various means of supporting the “Educate to Innovate” initiative as well as the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities’ Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative.
