College Meeting Next Friday

Rather than the standing College Meeting on February 18th, faculty and staff will meet in two separate locations to discuss issues important to each group.

The Dean and Associate Deans will not be in attendance at either meeting.

The faculty discussion will be led by the CHS Senators (Andreatta, Dupont, & English) and will meet in the CTW 014.

The staff discussion will be led by Staff Council Chair (Meredith Houlihan) and will meet in CTW 216. Please plan to attend and bring any issues you would like to discuss with your colleagues.

Marie Poole will still send out the monthly report prior to the meeting. If you have any questions, please contact the dean.

Announcement of Managed Print Services (MPS) Program

The University recently underwent an analysis of its operations to identify areas to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. As a result, a project was initiated to lower the total cost of copy and print output called Managed Print Services (MPS). MPS is a service offered by an external contractor to analyze the print environment and manage print output devices to reduce the total cost of ownership and improve efficiency and productivity.

The MPS program was developed by a cross functional team comprised of representatives from the administrative, academic and medical areas of the institution. Following a competitive solicitation process, the team evaluated responses and selected IKON, a Ricoh Company, as the exclusive partner to manage the MPS program. As part of the partnership with the University, Ikon will be assessing office output devices (copiers, printers, faxes, scanners and multi-functional devices) and providing recommendations for a comprehensive approach with a single price per page for black and white and another for color impressions.

In the coming months you will hear more about the program, its benefits, and potential cost savings. An MPS project team has been created to oversee the program's implementation.

Pilot projects are under way, and a complete project list is being developed. To have your department or area assessed for the MPS program or to discuss immediate equipment needs, please contact the MPS project team at UKMPS@uky.edu.

Grand Opening of Samaritan’s Touch UK Student Physical Therapy Clinic

All faculty and staff are invited to attend the grand opening of the Samaritan’s Touch UK Student Physical Therapy Clinic.

Wednesday, Feb. 23 • Noon – 1 p.m.
UK HealthCare Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Clinic, 125 E. Maxwell Street

Light refreshments will be available before the ribbon-cutting ceremony. A tour of the facility, led by physical therapy student volunteers will follow.

Physical Therapy Career Fair

The Division of Physical Therapy will be host its annual PT Career Fair on Friday, Feb. 25, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. – noon throughout the first two floors of the Wethington Building. This will be followed by afternoon interviews for the third year PT students.

We anticipate 160 PT students will participate in the morning Fair and nearly 60 in interviews.

Children with Disabilities Conference

“Meeting the Therapy Needs of Infants, Toddlers and Children with Disabilities in Rural Communities”

This conference focuses on serving the needs of rural occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists who desire increased competency in the provision of evidence-based practice service delivery and increased understanding of diversity issues for infants, toddlers and children with disabilities in early intervention or school-based settings.

Committee Service Opportunities

As you each think about your next year’s DOE, please keep in mind that several positions will need to be filled on a variety of committees. Some committee members are elected and some are appointed. If you are interested in serving on any of the committees below, please contact Anne Olson so that your name can be placed on the ballot for elections to be held in March.

These committees are an integral part of our joint faculty efforts to self governance, and so we are each obligated to serve to the best of our ability. Additionally, committee work is a great way to get to know other faculty within our College. Please consider serving the CHS in whatever capacity your DOE allows.

Apply to Teach Abroad

The Kentucky Institute for International Studies (KIIS), a leader in international education, invites faculty members from across the academic spectrum to apply to teach on KIIS's Summer 2012 study abroad programs. The application deadline for Summer 2012 programs is March 1, 2011.

Faculty members do not need to speak a foreign language to teach in a KIIS program; only four of KIIS’s 24 summer programs (Munich, Paris II, Spain I, and Spain II) have a language requirement. KIIS runs programs in the following countries: Argentina, Austria (Salzburg and Bregenz), China, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, France (two programs in Paris), Germany (Berlin and Munich), Greece, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco/Spain, Poland/Ukraine, Quebec, Spain, Tanzania and Turkey.

The major criteria for selection of courses are appropriateness to the geographic location, academic focus of the program, and the expected level of student interest. KIIS offers faculty members the following additional benefits: all living expenses for the duration of the program; a $2,000 stipend, a round-trip airline ticket, assistance in recruiting students, orientation sessions, indemnification against liability, comprehensive medical insurance, emergency medical evacuation, and security evacuation protection.

Applications must be approved by the faculty member's academic supervisor (Department Head/Chair) at the faculty members' home institution. The final selection of faculty and courses will be made by the KIIS Board of Directors at its April 9, 2011 meeting. Faculty will be informed of decisions in early May 2011.

LibQUAL Survey

UK Libraries will be assessing service quality by asking faculty and students to complete the national LibQUAL survey from February 14-28. Data from the survey will help UK Libraries understand faculty and student expectations and perceptions of library service.

A sample of faculty and students will receive an e-mail message (via UK e-mail) with a link to the survey. This year's shortened version of the survey, LibQUAL Lite, will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Your participation is appreciated, and undergraduate and graduate students who complete the survey are entered in a drawing to win a free iPad. Back to Top

University Leadership Summit

The Office of Student Involvement is beginning to plan the 7th annual University Leadership Summit. As many of you know, Summit is a program that brings together undergraduate student leaders from across campus who work to create positive change for the University. 4th Annual Multicultural Health Careers Open House

Saturday, March 5, 2011

The annual Multicultural Health Careers Open House continues the University’s commitment to building diversity by targeting traditionally underrepresented minorities interested in the Health Professions. Please note, however, this event is open to ANY interested student. The Open House will give prospective students from the state of Kentucky and surrounding areas and their families the opportunity to meet and greet the Deans and select staff and students from each of the University’s Health Professions Colleges.

Students will again have the chance to choose from a myriad of different interest sessions designed to provide information about the Colleges of Health Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health. In addition, other detailed interest sessions will be offered for students should they decide to attend. Among them: Financing a professional school education, Interviewing, and Other ways to be a competitive applicant. Finally, prospective students will have the opportunity to visit the UK Healthcare Colleges and participate in an open, frank discussion with current professional students about their experiences.

The 4th annual Multicultural Health Careers Open House is open to any interested high school, current undergraduate or graduate student.

Check-in will begin at 9:15am in the Biological Pharmaceutical Complex (BPC - NEW College of Pharmacy building) with the event beginning promptly at 10am. The event will end by 2:45pm. Due to space capacity, students are ideally limited to 2 guests.

ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED and is also available by directly visiting the Registration Website.

Please keep in mind, seating is limited so register early! Be sure to bring a friend or two! Registration may close early, if capacity is reached.

STEM Education Conference

Friday, April 29, 2011 – Student Center

The Second Annual STEM Education Conference at the University of Kentucky will focus on STEM research, teaching and learning and engagement with goals of generating new partnerships and collaboration across the STEM disciplines.

Faculty, K-12 educators and STEM undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to present STEM Education related research or experiences. Presenters may choose among three formats: paper presentation, “round table” discussion, and poster presentation.

Keynote Speaker President Lee T. Todd, Jr.
“Supporting STEM Initiatives in Kentucky and Nationwide”
President Todd will discuss how we are attempting to leverage STEM initiatives to positively impact the STEM pipeline in Kentucky and across the nation. The President will speak about various means of supporting the “Educate to Innovate” initiative as well as the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities’ Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative.
