Livingston Appointed to BIAK Board of Directors

Congratulations to Scott Livingston, who has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky (BIAK) for a two-year term beginning January 2011.

BIAK serves those affected by brain injury through advocacy, education, prevention, service and support. For more information about BIAK, visit www.biak.us.

Grants Officer Candidates

The top two candidates for the College Grants Officer position will be available to meet with CHS faculty next Wednesday, Jan. 12th in CTW 205A. In no particular order, the first candidate will be here at 9 a.m., the second candidate will be here at 1 p.m.

We would like you to have the opportunity to ask any questions or get to know the candidates and be able to provide Dr. Charlotte Peterson with feedback prior to making a hiring decision. Spring 2011 Kick-off & Faculty Council Retreat

Friday, January 14, 2011

All faculty and staff are invited to the Spring 2011 Kick-off & Faculty Council Retreat. The day will begin with a presentation from Dr. Karin Lewis, Director of UK Academic Enhancement, on the topic of “New Audiences, New Pedagogies.” The presentation will update you on the cognitive development of students in our classrooms who have grown up in the digital age and review effective instructional strategies you can use with this cohort. Come a few minutes early for a light breakfast.

The morning session will be followed by a box lunch at 11:15 a.m. The monthly College meeting will be held from noon – 1:30 p.m.

Note: There will be no distance hook-up for the faculty meeting – everyone is invited to come to the UK campus.

Payroll Tax Withholding Changes

There have been several Federal Tax Law changes that will affect many University of Kentucky employees payroll tax withholding in 2011. The tax law changes will effect each employee differently based on their individual tax situation.

University of Kentucky employees may see a difference in the payroll taxes withheld from their pay in 2011 due to changes in the Federal Tax Laws:

  1. The Making Work Pay Tax Credit, which was part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law by President Obama in February 2009, expired as of December 31, 2010. With the expiration of this Act employees may see an increase in the amount of federal income tax withheld.
  2. The Internal Revenue Service Withholding Allowance and the wage bracket tables for pay check calculation has changed for 2011. See pages 35 through 37 of the following link: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15.pdf
  3. Advance Earned Income Credit has been rescinded and will no longer be reflected on pay checks. Employees eligible for Earned Income Credit in 2011 will still be able to claim the credit upon filing their 2011 1040 series tax form.
  4. The employee portion of Social Security tax has been reduced from 6.2% to 4.2% for 2011. The Social Security tax break will have no effect on the worker’s potential Social Security benefits, as they will be based on their life time income. The employer paid portion of Social Security tax will remain at 6.2%.
  5. The surcharge wage bracket table was removed from the federal income tax calculation for Non-Resident Aliens. Also, the additional amount added to Non-Resident Alien wages has increased for 2011. See page 17 of the following link: www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15.pdf

    REQUIREMENTS: faculty members of any rank with primary appt in Graduate School
  • Periodic Program Reviews for:
    Communications and Information Studies, Graduate School, Medicine, Pharmacy and Social Work
    REQUIREMENTS: faculty members of any rank, internal or external to the college
  • Health Care Colleges Area Advisory Committee
    REQUIREMENTS: tenured faculty member from the College of Medicine
