Last day for submission of the EMI: November 1, 2009

It's time for UK faculty and professional staff to report their calendar year 2008 engagement activity. All faculty and professional staff with 2008 engagement activity in the CHS are requested to enter their activities on the UK Engagement Measurement Instrument (EMI) found at: https://univext.gws.uky.edu/ukccs/applogin.php

The EMI

Phil Greasley reports that the short, simplified UK Engagement Measurement Instrument is entirely project/activity based. Most questions are quick-to-complete check boxes, drop boxes, or very short answers. Respondents should be able to input all needed information for one engagement project/activity in about five minutes. Clicking on underlined terms provides definitions.

What to Report

Activities to be reported include:Activities to be reported include: 1) research and creative works addressing community needs and conducted with a partner outside UK and academia, 2) technical assistance, 3) credit, noncredit, or public events and community instruction meeting an expressed community need, 4) oversight of service-learning or experiential education, 5) service in the respondent's area of expertise on community boards, committees, or commissions, and 6) clinical service occurring beyond the campus.

2007 Entries

To assist you, Rena Murphy has prepared a document (click here to download) regarding last year's EMI entries. In addition to the faculty name, she left three text columns in the spreadsheet:

  • Project title (1)
  • Project actions (6)
  • Project Outcomes (15)

Rena also listed the number of the item on the new form for this year so that faculty will know where the text goes for 2008.

As another option, you can locate data by Kentucky county from last year's reporting of 2007 engagement activity are available online at: http://univext.gws.uky.edu/County_Lookup2008.php. Kentucky maps showing 2007 engagement density along with project information are also available on request for the full university or individual colleges.

Why is the EMI important?

Documentation of UK engagement activity supports the UK Strategic Plan, the Top 20 Business Plan, CPE engagement reporting requirements and some UK college accreditation requirements. It also helps UK make the case for state funding as a strategic asset working to meet Kentucky needs. Metric 5-1 of UK's draft 2009-2014 Strategic Plan calls for increases in faculty and staff engagement reporting in the UK Engagement Measurement Instrument.

Strong participation from all areas of the university is important. We ask your cooperation in completing this task.

Please contact Sharon Stewart or Rena Murphy if you have any concerns or questions.
