Physician Assistant Studies students receive white coatsLexington, Ky. – March 19, 2009 – Fifty-one students from the College of Health Sciences Physician Assistant (PA) Class of 2010 received white coats at the recent white coat ceremony. “The white coat symbolizes a transition from the classroom to the clinic,” said Katie Cranfill, white coat recipient and hospitality chair for the PA Class of 2010. “It is synonymous with the practice of medicine and carries the responsibility to uphold the tenets of the Hippocratic Oath.” Dr. Anthony Weaver, clinical faculty member at the university welcomed the students, faculty and family members present with the same concept. Weaver emphasized to the audience that the students are now embarking upon a transitional phase in their education. “Initial learning is self centered…this is service learning,” said Weaver. Vice President of Clinical Operations for UK Dr. Richard Lofgren was the keynote speaker at the ceremony. Lofgren gave the students a mission and challenged them to fix the health care problems of today. To do this, they must first constantly improve the health care environment and second they must become innovators within their profession, said Lofgren. For students like Cranfill, becoming a physician assistant allows her to have a variety of opportunities. “It gives me a chance to work in multiple areas of medicine which does not restrict me to one particular specialty,” said Cranfill. “I look forward to applying the knowledge learned in the classroom to better serve my future patients.” Class of 2010: Martha Adams: Salyersville, Ky.
