Steve Schwarze, Ph.D., MLS(ASCP)CM
Assistant Professor, Medical Laboratory Science
Biography
Dr. Schwarze received a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998. Over the next six years
he furthered his education with post-doctoral training, conducting research at Washington University (Howard Hughes Medical
Institute) in St. Louis and at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2005 he became a faculty member at
the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center. After being in the research field for 20 years, Dr. Schwarze obtained
training as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in 2011 and earned professional certification in 2012. Dr. Schwarze joined the
Medical Laboratory Science Program at the University of Kentucky in 2013 as an Assistant Professor.
Educational Focus
Dr. Schwarze teaches Clinical Immunology, Immunohematology (Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine), and Molecular Diagnostics.
Research/Scholarship Interests
Dr. Schwarze has an adjunct appointment in the Department of Pathology. His main area of interest is the molecular analysis of
human tumor specimens. In the clinical laboratory, he oversees development, validation, and implementation of fluorescent
in-situ hybridization (FISH) testing in solid tumors. The results of these assays are integral for directing patient treatment
of breast and lung cancer, and the diagnosis and prognosis of other tumor types. Dr. Schwarze’s research interests
address how various molecular alterations are associated with diagnosis, prognosis and progression of brain cancer and other
solid tumor types.
