Rita R. Patel is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Communication Sciences & Disorders within the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, with both clinical and research responsibilities. She joined the faculty in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2008 and currently serves as Director of the Clinical Voice Center.


Dr. Patel received her B.S. and M.S. in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology from the University of Mumbai, India. She completed her Ph.D. in Voice Science (Speech Pathology) in 2006 from the University of Wisconsin Madison. She has worked in the various clinical settings such as private practice, public schools, and hospital. She has extensive clinical expertise in management of both adult and pediatric population with dysphonia.

 

Scholarly/Research Interests
Dr. Patel’s primary areas of interest are vocal physiology and biomechanics of hoarseness. Her research focuses on use of high speed digital imaging to investigate vocal physiology disturbances caused by severe dysphonia. Her other interests include development of electronic teaching aids.

 

Educational Focus
Dr. Patel provides clinical instruction in the areas of voice and swallowing. Dr. Patel also supervises graduate students and clinical fellows in Communication Sciences and Disorders

2007: Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Thomas Delmar Learning Award for best dissertation in Speech Language Pathology

2006: Viki Lord Larson and James R. Larson Research Grant, Wisconsin Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Professional Foundation

1999: Dr. Aberol’s award for the best paper presentation in voice at the 31st National Conference of Indian Speech and Hearing Association
