A Message from the former University of Kentucky President

It’s all about the students…

These words come to mind each morning as I walk across campus to my office. Along the way I encounter dozens of students from many different backgrounds. As I look into each face, I’m reminded that what we’re doing at the University of Kentucky on a daily basis is important because it’s all about the students.

One of the largest obstacles our students and their families face today is paying for a college education. With rising costs of higher education and cuts in state funding, the need for scholarship assistance for our students has never been greater.

For this reason, I am pleased to announce a campaign to increase the amount of scholarship support available to students at the University of Kentucky. Our theme of “see blue. make a difference” emphasizes what scholarship s can do for students pursuing an education and the fulfillment of an academic dream.

You are invited to join us in this great undertaking for the students of the University of Kentucky. Your support, combined with that of others who will stand with us, will enable the University to meet this noble challenge and prepare even more leaders of tomorrow.

– Lee T. Todd, Jr.President, BS 1968

How much financial assistance to students at the University of Kentucky need to attain their educational goals?

  • In the 2008-09 academic year, more than 7,500 University of Kentucky undergraduate students (40 percent of all undergraduates) were in need of financial aid to cover the cost of their college education.
  • After aid from all available sources was awarded in the 2008-09 academic year, more than 5,300 undergraduate students (28 percent of all undergraduates) had remaining unmet, unfunded need totaling more than $29 million. This number is potentially higher for graduate programs, such as those in the College of Health Sciences.
  • Total average unmet need of $5,470 per student.
  • University of Kentucky students cover their unmet need by borrowing and/or working more than they should.
  • The average amount generated per year by a $50,000 endowment is $2,000.
