Resident of the Month

April 2010

Shira Gurvitz, M.D., Anesthesiology, has been selected as our resident of the month for April 2010.  Nominated by two individuals at UK, the following was cited (amongst other things):  “Although only a PGY2 resident, Dr. Gurvitz is a role model not only for all residents but for all physicians.  In my opinion Dr. Gurvitz is exemplary in her compassion.” (one of two examples cited follows)  “Last week I was walking down the hall some yards behind Dr. Gurvitz and observed as she paused twice in her progress down the hall.  Once there was a family that was obviously lost; although 6 or 8 other hospital staff members walked by the family without apparently noticing them, Dr Gurvitz stopped to talk with them.  Although I didn’t overhear the conversation, it was obvious form that the fact that she turned and was pointing down the hall that she was giving them directions.  About 10 yards further down the hall she again stopped and opened a door for a “challenged” patient.  My guess is that if you ask Dr. Gurvitz about either of these episodes she will have absolutely no recollection of either of them.  The point is that this is her second nature and not something that required thought or was memorable to her in any way.  In my opinion that is, however, an indication of her compassion.”  “…she’s pleasant and ‘upbeat’ as one of my staff quoted.”  “She never complains even when the pace is pressed during primetime OR utilization hours.”  And, “…Dr. Gurvitz has also been singled out by medical students rotating on anesthesia as being a very effective teacher.”

Congratulations, Dr. Gurvitz!
