Resident of the Month September 2007Aletia Farmer, M.D., Internal Medicine resident, has been selected as the resident of the month for September 2007. Below please find an excerpt from the nomination on which the selection is based: I would like to nominate Dr Aletia Farmer for Resident of the Month. She exemplifies many of the best qualities of our trainees. On a number of occasions her prompt actions averted clinical deterioration of unstable patients. However, her most impressive interaction was with a patient with (patient information redacted). The patient became convinced that being DNR meant he would not be treated, and changed his status back to full code. A day or so later, he developed severe respiratory distress and Dr Farmer intubated him. Once his airway was protected, the conscious patient and his family realized that this was not the way he wished to finish his life. Dr Farmer reviewed the issues with them, and with the family and patient in agreement, removed the endotracheal tube and moved him to a private room, where his family was able to be with him until he drifted away several hours later. In this way, she demonstrated excellent medical care, mature judgement, and compassion. I recommend her with enthusiasm. Congratulations, Dr. Farmer!
