Resident Program Handbook

IT IS EXPECTED THAT RESIDENTS WILL ATTEND THE FOLLOWING REGULARLY SCHEDULED CONFERENCES:

Pre-operative Surgical Conference
Weekly resident presentations, preoperative analysis of surgical cases and case follow-up presentations.

Head and Neck Oncology Conference
Weekly multidisciplinary conference which includes otolaryngologists, general supgical oncologists, plastic surgeons, oral surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, speech pathologists, in addition to residents and students. This conference provides a multi-faceted approach to the complex problems of head and neck cancer.

Otolaryngology Grand Rounds
Monthly didactic presentations by residents, faculty and local otolaryngologists. Each resident will give an average of two or three grand rounds presentations per academic year. These presentations are typically on interesting and/or rare disease or operative cases.

Facial Trauma Conference
Monthly conference on the management of facial trauma, with presentations by otolaryngologists, oral surgeons, and general plastic surgeons.

Head and Neck Pathology Conference
Quarterly conference given by pathologists on head and neck pathology. The conference will typically pick one general topic (e.g., thyroid pathology) and delve into great detail regarding the histology and pathological presentations of associated disease processes.

Head and Neck Radiology Conference
Bimonthly joint conference with radiologists. Similar to the pathology conference, a radiologist will typically present a general topic (e.g., temporal bone radiology), and then delve into greater detail of interesting and important anatomical landmarks, associations, and abnormal findings.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference
Monthly discussion of surgical complications to help improve recognition and decrease the incidence of future complications.

Journal Club
Monthly discussion of pertinent articles in recent peer-reviewed journals to help residents to critically appraise medical literature, and to stimulate interest in the journals appropriate to our specialty.
