Orofacial Pain

Eductional Programs

The Orofacial Pain Center has been offering education in the areas of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain since 1985. Presently, the Center offers three full time graduate training programs and three part-time continuing education programs.  Each of these programs is highlighted here. The Orofacial Pain Fellowship Program: A one-year full-time program for dentists interested in advancing their didactic and clinical skills in the area of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. For more information.

The Orofacial Pain Certificate Program: This two-year certificate program provides the didactic and clinical skills to manage complex temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain. Completion of this program makes the candidate eligible to sit for the American Board of Orofacial Pain. For more information.

The Orofacial Pain Master of Science Degree Program: This two- to three-year Master of Science Degree program provides the didactic and clinical skills to manage complex temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain while also training the individual to carry out research in the field of orofacial pain. This program requires the individual to complete an independent research study, submit the results to a peer-reviewed Journal and publicly defend the results in order to receive the Master’s degree. This program is accredited through the Graduate School at the University of Kentucky. Completion of this program makes the candidate eligible to sit for the American of Orofacial Pain. The Orofacial Pain Shadowing Program: This program is a one-week continuing education program made available to practitioners and educators who would like to observe the functions of the orofacial pain center. The individual participates in all literature sessions, seminars and case conferences during the week. The individual also has the opportunity to observe in all clinical activities. The Orofacial Pain Mini-Residency Program: This program is a one-week didactic continuing education program in which the participant receives 37 hours of lectures and seminars in the area of TMD, orofacial pain and sleep disorders. This program is offered only one week a year, usually during the month of May. It is a thorough and intense evidence-based review of many topics related to the diagnosis and management of orofacial pain and sleep disorders. The Annual Orofacial Pain Alumni Day: This program is a one-day continuing education program presented each year in the spring. The topics change each year. The general format is to invite a well-known outside speaker to present a topic of his or her expertise during the morning. During the afternoon the faculty and residents provide an update on the clinical and research activities of the Center or present other pertinent information. For more information.
