Orofacial Pain

About the University of Kentucky Orofacial Pain Center

The Orofacial Pain Center at the University of Kentucky was founded in 1977 for the purpose of helping patients suffering with various temporomandibular disorders. Since that time it has expanded into a multi-disciplinary center for the management of complex orofacial pain problems, including temporomandibular disorders. Patients are routinely evaluated by dentists, clinical psychologists and physical therapists. Medical and dental specialists are called upon regularly to assist in the diagnosis and management of complex pain problems.

In 1997 the University of Kentucky Orofacial Pain Master's Degree Program was nationally accredited by the Post-Graduate Education Committee of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. The Kentucky Program was the first to achieve this national accreditation.

Accreditation for the Advanced Education Program in Orofacial Pain Successful!
The Orofacial Pain Program has become one of the first of three orofacial pain programs in the nation to be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.  After a successful site visit in March of 2011, the accreditation became official in October of 2011.

The Orofacial Pain Center Facility

The Orofacial Pain Center is located on the fifth floor of the College of Dentistry. The College of Dentistry is located in one wing of the A. B. Chandler Medical Center on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, Kentucky. The facility is made up of a private patient reception and waiting room with an adjacent secretarial office. The treatment area consists of six private dental cubicles and a private clinical psychology room. An additional room is used for clinical research. There are also private consultation rooms, a residents' office with multiple computers connected to e-mail and the Internet, and a dental laboratory.

Medical Center Library: The holdings of the Medical Center Library are quite extensive. The card catalog can be accessed online via the Library's website. Computing facilities are available in the library for student use. Classes are available in conducting on- and offline literature searches.

W.T. Young Library: Opened April 3, 1998, the 58 million dollar library stands as a monument to the University of Kentucky's commitment to present and future generations and their education. The building measures 361,000 square feet, seats over 4,000 patrons, and houses 1.2 million volumes. Available to students are over 3,500 computer network ports, 600 personal computers, and the latest in state-of-the-art technologies.
